Tens of thousands of people on parole or probation in N.J. could be able to vote

About 80,000 people in New Jersey who are on parole or probation could soon have the right to vote.

A key state Senate committee cleared legislation A5823 Thursday, setting up a final vote in the full Senate is scheduled for Monday.

If it passes, it will then head to the desk of Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat who has said he supports the measure.

“It’s a right, it’s not a privilege,” said state Sen. Ron Rice, D-Essex, one of the bill’s main sponsors, said.

“Some people may think it’s a privilege, but then you tell those women who marched during women’s suffrage that it’s not a right, it’s a privilege,” Rice said. “We won’t accept that.”
