his seat. Since the Democrats don't have a comparable welfare circuit for out of work politicians, he needs to switch before he loses his seat.

5. To those so upset over losing a seat and mad at those who say good riddance:

Van Drew apparently concluded that he couldn't keep his seat as a Democrat, either for or against impeachment. Maybe he's wrong, but that's beside the point.

This is not someone who was only voting with Democrats half the time. According to 538, he's voted against the Trump position on everything but impeachment-related matters: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/congress-trump-score/jeff-van-drew/.

This is simply someone putting his job over his principles. He must figure running as a Republican gives him his best chance at keeping his job. Maybe he's wrong, but - again - that's beside the point.

What will be interesting and sad is if his positions on issues suddenly do a 180, a prime example of party over principles--where you change the letter after your name and all of a sudden you start voting in a completely different way.

8. Looks like he also voted against holding Barr in contempt

as well as not voting on providing aid to Puerto Rico. Sure he may have opposed Trump on numerous issues, but not on anything that would seriously tick of the Trump administration off. I suspect he has been eyeing this move sense the day he got elected. No doubt he will flip everyone of his positions now to please Trump and republicans.

I think Trump won his district by like 5 points. That doesn't sound like some impossible for a Democrat to win district. He could've gotten reelected by listening to the people that got him elected in the first place. Instead he decided screw em and ran off to join the Fox news crowd so no one here should be upset, because people are saying good riddance to this guy.

9. I'd consider the Barr vote to be impeachment-related.

And I don't know why he didn't vote (for or against) on aid for Puerto Rico.

I'm not going to lament the lost seat, because I don't think there's anything Pelosi and Co. should have done differently. Some (in other threads about Van Drew) have expressed outrage over posters saying things like "good riddance," but I don't think that outrage is warranted. Van Drew is putting his job over principles and there's nothing we can do about that, except hope we defeat him next year.

10. New Jersey Republicans not interested in party-jumping Jeff Van Drew as their candidate in 2020
Sun Dec 15, 2019, 06:04 PM

It appears that Van Drew will not be the GOP nominee automatically if he switches parties. Even with trump's support, there is a very good chance that this idiot will lose in the GOP primary where there are already a number of long time republicans running.

Democratic lawmaker Rep. Jeff Van Drew (NJ) is not being welcomed with open arms by Republicans in his district after word got out that he is planning on switching parties following lobbying from President Donald Trump.

With polling in his district showing he was facing an uphill climb for re-election the Democrat, who is considered fairly conservative and has opposed the impeachment of Trump, is expected to announce the switch soon with reports stating he has already informed his staffers of the imminent move.....

“Van Drew’s political conversion doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be the GOP nominee. Three Republicans had already declared their candidacies for his seat. And while Trump’s backing would be politically potent, it would have to overcome hard GOP feelings from decades of tough election battles against Van Drew.”

One Republican vying for Van Drew’s seat wasted no time attacking the party-switcher, saying the lawmaker is “trying to use South Jersey Republicans to cling onto his power.”
