Rep. Jeff Van Drew, anti-impeachment Democrat, expected to switch parties after Trump meeting

Officials said Saturday that Rep. Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey, a vocally anti-impeachment Democrat, will join the Republican Party in the coming days — delivering a political jolt to Democrats ahead of next week’s expected vote to impeach the president.

The decision, they said, came after Van Drew joined President Trump for a lengthy Friday meeting, during which Trump urged him to join the GOP.

Three Democratic officials familiar with Van Drew’s discussions in recent days said he has decided to switch parties; two said his staff was informed of his decision Saturday. The White House meeting was confirmed by a Trump administration official and one of the Democratic officials.

Van Drew, his chief of staff and his communications director did not respond to requests for comment Saturday.

Warren's political philosophy changed long before she entered politics, as a result of studying bankruptcy and meeting those who were filing bankruptcy.

In the case of Van Drew, he's consistently voted against the Trump position, but he's decided to oppose impeachment and switch parties, apparently because he thinks it's the only way to keep his job. See post #12.

As much as I'd like to see him get hammered by the voters, he'll probably get away with it.

Sad.

...he's decided to side with Trump and Republicans. On such a clear-cut matter. It's not like he's been voting with Democrats only half the time.

So, is he suddenly going to start siding with the Republican position on all other issues, too?

Sure, Van Drew might have gotten primaried, but the whole reason he would have gotten primaried is because of his opposition to impeachment. His voting record, overall, is just fine (see link above). I guess he figures he'd be destined to lose as a Democrat who favors impeachment or as a Democrat who opposes impeachment, so his only hope of keeping his job is to switch parties. But if he suddenly changes the way he votes, that'll be the ultimate example of party over principles. You switch the letter after your name and all of a sudden your positions do a 180.

Van Drew must have concluded that he would lose re-election as a Democrat, either for or against impeachment. He's putting his job over principles.

It appears that Van Drew will not be the GOP nominee automatically if he switches parties. Even with trump's support, there is a very good chance that this idiot will lose in the GOP primary where there are already a number of long time republicans running.

Democratic lawmaker Rep. Jeff Van Drew (NJ) is not being welcomed with open arms by Republicans in his district after word got out that he is planning on switching parties following lobbying from President Donald Trump.

With polling in his district showing he was facing an uphill climb for re-election the Democrat, who is considered fairly conservative and has opposed the impeachment of Trump, is expected to announce the switch soon with reports stating he has already informed his staffers of the imminent move.....

“Van Drew’s political conversion doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be the GOP nominee. Three Republicans had already declared their candidacies for his seat. And while Trump’s backing would be politically potent, it would have to overcome hard GOP feelings from decades of tough election battles against Van Drew.”

One Republican vying for Van Drew’s seat wasted no time attacking the party-switcher, saying the lawmaker is “trying to use South Jersey Republicans to cling onto his power.”
