I think I see far less downside to Van Drew flipping parties. He's hitching his cart to Trump's corruption and can be challenged more clearly in election.

As a constituent in his district that has also worked a number of campaigns there a party switch likely ends his political career. He may even have issues surviving a primary. Plus the state party and unions will have a field day.

The Van Drew story seems pretty simple to me: the guy got a poll back saying that voters in his swing district would punish him for voting against impeachment, so he decided to switch parties to keep his job.Link to tweet

(32,084 posts)A lot of people who are hitching their wagons to Trump are going to see their careers get flushed down the toilet. And, it probably won't take more than one or two flushes.

(43,166 posts)Party flip flop is a sign of pure incompetence, like he doesn't know what he stands for. He doesn't need to switch parties to cast a vote against, so what is he up to? I think he's being leveraged in some way.

Some of us have had enough of Jefferson Van Drew, one top Democrat told the Globe. Hes on his own now.
He looks kind of goofy in that photograph.

(12,382 posts)Even Trump billboards supporting Trump that were not paid for by the Trump campaign. N.R.A. bumper stickers are often sighted (but I can't recall seeing a gun rack on a pick-up.)
Teabagging flags and bumper stickers are still around, but the Tea Party seems to have lost much of its steam.
I wouldn't entirely count him out. However, I don't think he can win the Dem party's nod.
He might advertise himself as the only N.J. Congressman who recognized impeachment as an "attempted coup." His ads would have to be simplistic to impress his intended audience.

(35,675 posts)they cite a poll of his constituents which says a majority want impeachment.
When a Congressman has a poll like that and votes against it, it says he's voting on his own personal feelings or he's beholden to the system.

(145,264 posts)It appears that Van Drew will not be the GOP nominee automatically if he switches parties. Even with trump's support, there is a very good chance that this idiot will lose in the GOP primary where there are already a number of long time republicans running.

With polling in his district showing he was facing an uphill climb for re-election the Democrat, who is considered fairly conservative and has opposed the impeachment of Trump, is expected to announce the switch soon with reports stating he has already informed his staffers of the imminent move.....
Van Drews political conversion doesnt necessarily mean hell be the GOP nominee. Three Republicans had already declared their candidacies for his seat. And while Trumps backing would be politically potent, it would have to overcome hard GOP feelings from decades of tough election battles against Van Drew.
One Republican vying for Van Drews seat wasted no time attacking the party-switcher, saying the lawmaker is trying to use South Jersey Republicans to cling onto his power.
