so, i have this little farm. it's been in the news a few times.
i also live a few short miles from northwestern, as well as loyola, both of which have journalism programs.
so, i have been interviewed several times by j students.
most times i read what they wrote, and shook my head.
here's the thing- they ask basic question, the w's and all that.
fine. start there. if you have a good interviewee, you will get a decent story.
but here is the thing- you ask those questions when you know nothing.
but when you actually have a knowledge base, you ask completely different, better questions. you might be able to write a better article than the usual- abc of urban farming, say. you might be able to write something that is actually enlightening. that contains info that your fellow citizens might be able to use.
now, witt and todd are both guilty, imho, of asking those stupid j-101 questions. always. in spite of all they know at this point, they keep asking the same stupid questions. they ask 'what is trump thinking?'- the stupidest question ever. the most irrelevant at this point. they continue to give their 'innocent' benefit of the doubt type questions.
they make me sick. such epic fails they are.

BTW those districts might have very well gone to Trump because of Russian/Republican meddling.

(34,661 posts)corporate script readers are just that. MSNBC as well as it's so called parent,NBC are wholly owned subsidiary of Comcast Cable Company. Comcast is going to control most of the messaging in order to protect their Meal Ticket Trump.
It is the Program Director and Producers whom call the shots and do the writing and rewriting of the on air talents Q&A. Yes,the Talent has a certain amount of leeway but that has limits. Only O'Donnell and Maddow have total control .. Weekend so called Anchors are usually the low paid Talent who are not ready for Prime Time.

(34,661 posts)to expand the Q&A and that is because of the major push back from viewers when she was stripped of her Prime time spot and the fact Comcast had zero Female African-American Script readers. When the eye-ball numbers move in any direction, you can damn well bet there will be adjustments.
The major outlier is Chuck Todd and Tweety. One was hired by Roger Alies and the other was hired as VP in charge of Political Affairs.

(53,410 posts)I think its possible most of them simply dont have a clue about connecting the dots quickly as background for a more in depth developed story to expand. Or their professors, who might be failed journalists, discourage anything outside the rules.
Its also formulaic writing. Like the genre rules for romance novels where words depicting the male anatomy cant be the correct terminology and the plots have definite dos and donts.

(2,380 posts)Witt is just a vanilla journalist without much in the way of imagination or gray matter. Todd has an agenda. He always wants to stir the pot and particularly to piss off democrats. I don't trust him. Can't stand the way he frames questions.

(6,917 posts)Todd, et al, think if they act dumb they will be relatable to Trump devotees and Republicans.
The problem is, those people are just playing dumb. Theyre just repeating and mindlessly doing what Trump says. Theyre cult members, so no amount of journalism and facts can change their opinionthey hardly believe themselves. Next year, those hypocrites will say the opposite.

Todd's function is to fill airtime between ads for drugs we never knew we needed and nothing more. It is Infotainment and nothing more. Don't hold him to a standard higher than what his employers expect. If you don't like his presentation, find something else as it will not change.
