I want to tell you a story. An important story.
And then I want you to share it.
To help people understand why the small things we do matter - amidst all the big things that seem so insurmountable and scary.
1/ I want to tell you what 7 yr old Daniel did, 7 yrs ago today.
2/ Daniel never awoke before his beloved older brother, who got on the bus at 6:20 each morning.
But on Dec.14, 2012, implausibly, he did. He hustled down the driveway in his pjs and flip flops, and hugged his brother goodbye.
The only time that ever happened, said his dad.
3/ Back inside, his dad told him he could go back to bed, but Daniel wouldnt. He wanted to cuddle with his dad.
When his sister left for school, and his mom left for work, they got big hugs too. So nice, they remember, because often Daniel was still asleep when they left.
4/ On the walk to the bus stop with his dad, he didnt want to play their usual game of tag.
Can we just hold hands today? He asked.
So they did.
5/ Daniel didnt come home on the bus that afternoon.
He died, 7 years ago today, in his first grade classroom.
But what he did that morning - the hugs, the cuddling, the holding hands - are, for his family, perhaps the most important things he ever did.

(2,410 posts)can have access to the most deadly anti-personnel shooting weapons available?
And so some other old white guys (every American gun manufacturer's CEO) can keep making money.
Greed and factionalism created the context for us losing this beautiful, young soul.
But, as we all know, "guns had nothing to do with it."

(6,254 posts)it was a hoax, there are more people than you think who believe these conspiracy theories. The internet has polluted their minds with conspiracy theories. An acquaintance I have known for 15 years, who is a very good psychiatrist, revealed to me several years ago that he believes Sandy Hook, 9-11 are all hoaxs, government conspiracies. He told me that then went online to show me video proof that the victims of mass shootings are actually actors. He pulled up various videos and the people he claimed were actors who didnt even look alike. Im talking about first responders to mass shooting etc. I mean this guy is a successful psychiatrist with a thriving practice. I would see him a couple times a year at various functions. The last time we spoke several years ago at a party, he was telling me about how the police were surveilling him because he treats opioid addiction. He wanted to ask me a legal question which I was happy to oblige. He first asked to see my phone. I was kinda taken off guard but reflexively handed my phone to him which he just looked at. A couple of weeks later, I was thinking about our interaction and it hit me, he must have thought I might be recording him for some reason. I havent seen him in awhile but next time I just might suggest he see a psychiatrist. We are living during strange times indeed.

(47,482 posts)Needed some tissue for that. What does it take to get through to the NRA supporters in congress? Sometimes I think someone they love has to become a victim of gun violence before they do the right thing. Not wishing that on anyone of course. I just can't imagine the insensitivity and cruelty of these people. Their political offices mean more than the lives of innocent children.

(11,586 posts)...to the most horrific, heartbreaking, and senseless loss of a child--a family member and a trusting innocent filled with promise and life expectations. Those children were our children. Our children now practice live shooter drills in schools all across our nation and are forced to live with terror they have no escape from.
All we can do is attempt to comfort them with promises that we will do all we can to make sure their fears never become reality, and our efforts die at the feet of Republicans.
Sandy Hook marked the Republicans as heinous villains, and they haven't done a thing to show another side of themselves since--and all while they wrap themselves in our treasured symbols of patriotism and parrot Russian-fed talking points.
Every single one of them should be confronted with their failure as human beings and as abusers of the public trust every damn day.
They revel in their ugliness and inhumanity.
That, and ill-gotten money.
