Otherwise he would have released them to get the issue out of the way.
If the Supreme Court decides he can keep them from being investigated, knowing what is likely in them, they may be complicit in his crimes.
If he is voted out next November he won't have the protection of the office so they will be released and hopefully the justice department will do their job.
If he remains president through 2024 the statute of limitations date will have passed so he won't be able to be charged and there may be no legal justification to have them released.
So I sure hope Scotus decides that Trukp can't hide them from Congress.

(16,113 posts)Who have been reviewing his taxes for years, and did nothing, go to jail. I wonder why they would allow such criminality to go on for so many years.

Average-Q citizen would have been prosecuted already for the things that Trump has gotten away with before he became president. How has he escaped justice?

(10,011 posts)At least some of the Trump wealth came from tax schemes and outright fraud, as reported by NYT last year. But when you can afford an army of accountants and lawyers to set up tax schemes and can create hundreds of companies in which to hide assets, its hard for the IRS to find the fraud. And even when they do, our legal system treats white collar crime with fines, leaving people like Trump to cheat again and again.
I would like to see changes in corporate law disallowing the creation of companies solely to hide transfers of money and assets. Are there any legitimate business reasons to have hidden companies, or are they mostly for tax evasion or to cheat investors in companies like Enron? I would also like our legal system to treat white collar crime seriously.
Thanks!

(20,998 posts)... He overvalues when he needs to use them as collateral and undervalues for tax purposes. His taxes could also show large influxes of cash from Russian* sources.
I don't think tRump* is worth anywhere near what he claims he is or has been worth, and that is the big thing he does not want anyone to see.

(4,461 posts)... evidence of actual criminality, I suspect. Supposedly hes been audited.
I think that they WILL show what a mediocre businessman he is, that hes been broke for years and living off reputation, loans, and his apprentice salary.
He fears their release because everyone will laugh at him for being pitifully full of shit.

(42,564 posts)Tax returns are generally fairly innocuous documents. Any criminal who can afford to have a competent accounting firm do their taxes is going to be submitting returns that appear completely above board. And yet, there is something in them that Donnie really, really, really does not want anyone to see.
