To All Republican Congressmen/Senators

Let me explain some things to you – not that you’d listen, not that you’d understand, but because I choose to speak up for what’s right when I can.

If you’ve wondered why the Democrats are proceeding with impeaching Donald Trump, despite the almost inevitable outcome of you refusing to convict, there are two things at play here.

First, the Democrats are honouring their oath to protect and defend the Constitution, and are compelled to act accordingly. You, on the other hand, have chosen to defend and protect Donald Trump, who has defied the Constitution – and both you and he have broken your oaths of office in doing so.

Secondly, the Democrats – some say naively, some say foolishly – for a long time held onto the slim hope that despite everything you have done to support and defend Donald Trump, his blatant defiance of the Constitution and the rule of law would be a line that even you would not allow to be crossed.

Even after watching you defend his lies, his cover-ups, his divisiveness, his racism, his kowtowing to Putin, his immorality, his lack of ethics, the Democrats still gave you the benefit of the doubt – still extended you the courtesy of at least wanting to believe that your conscience would kick-in, and you would finally say – albeit with reluctance – that enough was enough, and using the office of POTUS to extort a foreign ally for personal political gain was more than enough.

To put it in simple terms, we always knew that if Trump ‘shot someone on 5th Avenue’, you would rush to his defence, come up with a million reasons why the killing was justified, and spin the story into ‘the guy had it coming anyway’. That was a given.

What the Democrats never envisioned was that as he drew his gun on a crowded NYC street, you’d be standing behind him, reloading his weapon while pointing out other pedestrian targets within range.

What it comes down to, Republicans, is this. It is a heartbreak to see a corrupt, self-serving, racist, Russian asset occupying the White House, and watching him betray our country by undermining every institution and agency that underpins our democracy.

But it is truly an American tragedy to know without doubt that an entire American political party is just as willing to betray their country as is the traitor they put in office.

We now know who you are – and we are extremely saddened by that knowledge. Given the choice between upholding the Constitution and holding-up the clearly-corrupt Donald Trump, you’ve made your choice abundantly clear. And what’s worse, you’re taking pride in having done exactly that.

But by all means, celebrate your ‘victory’ while it lasts – because ”I’m a Republican and I chose Donald Trump over the welfare of my country” will make for a great bumper-sticker in many campaigns to come.

Well written, Nance. You've articulated, once again, true American patriotism.

You've also pointed out the rank hypocrisy of the Republicans.

Now they are influenced by two things: the dollar and the ruble.
