If you won't stand up for the social good of all then folks may as well vote for their worst instincts - racist nationalism.

Sure, as more Dems joined the group, it became a Democratic variant, but it's early inception was partly a Koch initiative to drag democrats to the 50 yard line. So even under the best of situation, Democrats only get "pragmatic" results, while most of the negotiations ended up favoring conservatives.
Pragmatism is a bullshit concept. It ONLY works when all parties are pragmatic and willing to compromise. Republicans are locked in extremist positions, and since Democrats are more reasonable, they are the ones who often negotiate in good faith, and this puts us in a disadvantage.

(94,737 posts)It may have been intended to "drag Democrats to the 50 Yard Line", but only because that where the votes were. That, you may recall, is where Clinton won after three wipeouts in 1980, 1984 and 1988.

(17,399 posts)Exit polls said that Perot voters would have split fairly evenly between Bush and Clinton, not enough to change the outcome.

(20,889 posts)But so far people have had few options but lite-neo liberalism, and heavy neo-liberalism. In too few places or the national level is there often even a choice of something else.

The lesson is when the white working class isn't prioritized in Western politics they tend to throw a populist tantrum.

(3,635 posts)don't turn to hateful politics, but attempt to work methodically through establishment parties... while whites having always been privileged/prioritized (and fearing a loss of that status) increasingly do the opposite.
