New York Dems expect to gain seats in state Senate as Republicans anticipate more retirements
ALBANY Democratic leaders believe the blue wave that swept through the state Senate last year was just the beginning.
A growing number of Republicans from all corners of the state have announced that they will not seek reelection, boosting the confidence of Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers) who believes her party stands to gain at least three seats next November.
Every day seems to be a new Republican retirement, Stewart-Cousins said Monday as her conference met near Albany for an annual pre-session retreat. I think that speaks volumes. I think they understand that we are going to continue to have a Democratic majority in the Senate.
Democrats gained control of the Senate in 2018 and currently hold a 40-23 advantage after knocking out a renegade group of Dems who had forged a power-sharing alliance with Republicans. Along with the Assembly, led by Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx), the newly-blue Senate passed a slate of long-stalled progressive pieces of legislation this year.
