American soldiers banned from Italian main street after vicious brawl

Around 2,000 US Army soldiers have been banned from one of the main streets in the Italian city of Vicenza after a brawl between soldiers and locals.

The temporary ban, which affects members of the 173rd Airborne Brigade stationed in the city, involves the quaint via Contra' Pescherie Vecchie, where two young Vicenza men say they were surrounded and beaten by several soldiers after a verbal exchange just outside a popular watering hole for off duty combat paratroopers.

An uptick in problems related to heavy drinking, violence and public disorder since the expansion has exasperated locals.

In 2014, several rape investigations and a car crash in the city centre involving three pedestrians made headlines. In 2016 and 2017 there were bloody brawls involving injuries and property damage. And in 2018, police intervened 550 times in violent incidents involving Americans, prompting new joint night patrols this year by U.S. military police and Italian Carabinieri.

Nothing like young men all amped up on testosterone and alcohol to spice up a local night out. Add a touch of racism and/or American exceptionalism, and you've got a volatile mix.

Basically an island with an excess of booze and hookers, a significant chunk of the native population who no longer wants us there, plus about 1/2 of all US forces assigned to Japan stationed there at any given time.

Absolutely malaise. This behavior comes from the CIC himself. He glorifies this kind of action.

USA, USA, USA

The recent pardoning of war criminals and murderers, (inviting and using this scum at trDump touch me/feel me Nazi Rallies for his second term) should likely exacerbate this meat head conduct. Fuck military honor, fuck military justice, fuck military code of conduct, fuck law and order, fuck terms of engagement, and fuck superior officer's disciplinary codes.

Averaging 1 1/2 a DAY? What do the WEEKENDS look like?

Would this not be perceived as a "problem" with command at the base level? Restrictions? Disciplinary actions?
I don't know the underlying details here, but this would seem to indicate loss of control .. and that gets people looking over your shoulder and breathing down your back pretty quick. Correct me if I'm wrong here.

Edit: link mentions "joint" (U.S./Italian) patrols at night .. so there is apparently cooperation, along with recognition and response to a problem by command. Still, it would seem greater efforts need to be taken. As I mention, "control and good discipline" are pretty important concepts.

The guys that go into the military tend to be not always the "let's stay home tonight, fellows, and embroider some doilies" type. They go out to get drunk, have a good time, get laid, and show that they're proud and not going to be insulted.

And there are always people who like to insult others. Very often guys from the other culture who go out to get drunk, have a good time, get laid, and show that they're proud and not going to be insulted. And part of that is fairly often "we gotta defend our women from them ferners."

I mean, what could go wrong?

Seriously, during summer school in the Czech Republic the couple hundred students, maybe half of them male, were involved in their share of fights or near fights. Poles, Germans, Brits, French, about the only ones *not* involved were the Americans. Unless we were hanging out with the Poles, Germans, Brits or French. (The Poles were the worse. They got evicted from one pivnice when they not only spilled beer but--gasp--insisted on breaking glassware.)

What's conspicuously absent is the idea that since American soldiers get involved in brawls, it's the result of the entire US government and that all US citizens are just like them. (That's what I hear from some xenophobes about the Saudi attacks in Pensacola. One or two Saudis did something seriously wrong, it's obviously official government policy and what all Saudi's are like. While I've met some Saudis that were real pieces of work, they're the minority.)
