Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, appeared to claim that mass shooter Dylann Roof hijacked the Confederate flag, and that it was seen as service, and sacrifice, and heritage before the 2015 Charleston Church Shooting, during an interview with the Blazes Glenn Beck this week.
Media Matters researcher Jason Campbell posted a clip from the interview on Twitter Friday.
On the topic of the shooting, Haley said, South Carolina fell to her knees when this happened. This is one of the oldest African-American churches. These twelve people were amazing people, they love their church, they love their family, they love their community.
And here is this guy that comes out with this manifesto, holding the Confederate flag, and had just hijacked everything that people thought of, she proclaimed. We dont have hateful people in South Carolina. Theres always the small minority thats always gonna be there, but, you know, people saw it as service, and sacrifice, and heritage, but once he did that there was no way to overcome it, and the national media came in in droves.

(14,972 posts)own other humans as property, and torture, rape and murder that "property" without interference from others. That is what it stood for.
It was literally a partial battle standard of a seditious army whose purpose was to perpetuate chattel slavery of black people, whose method was to kill hundreds of thousands of American citizen soldiers. THAT is what it was.
Later on it took on its more current form, and then it stood for terrorizing and murdering an already marginalized group in order to "keep them in their place" or the like.
If anyone is misusing or misappropriating it, it is not people like Dylann Roof -- it is the people like Haley who claim it is about heritage, sacrifice, or service.
