I am not positive, but I believe one of the victims was in the black car on the left side of the screen.

Innocents were involved, yet they shot into the truck? I'll wait to hear details, but I'm really upset by this.
ansible
(1,718 posts)This is quite possibly the most fucked up police shooting I've ever seen in my life. Holy fucking shit, they just shot at the poor UPS driver while he was crawling away and even killed another civilian while using civilian cars as cover!
This is the definition of a reckless approach to policing. Clearly they were not intent on rescuing the poor UPS man. They endangered everyone within sight and killed two innocent people.

(24,370 posts)Why is it that in situations similar to this, regardless of where they take place, dozens, even scores of police seem to feel the need to respond? Did this REALLY need all those cops? I think it is part of the ethos of being a cop - that desire to be part of "the action" no matter the ancillary effect. In this case, it resulted in at least 2 completely innocent people being shot by the police for no other reason than that need to be a part of the action. To have a literal shoot-out in a crowded intersection is absurd. How many cop cars are in that video? How many cops are on the street, shooting at that UPS truck? Talk about overkill.
I left Miami back in the late 80's. The various police departments were out of control back then. Seems they haven't learned much in the ensuing decades.

(25,981 posts)it was a shitshow anyway when the thief started shooting, but cops firing into that UPS truck guaranteed the death of the driver. Bystander death was also a guarantee.
It's horrifying, I just- wow.

There was no plan, clearly. If there was, it wouldnt have unfolded the way it did.

(25,981 posts)This points out that there was an egregious lack of training, as well as a lack of leadership. At the very least, every single one of those officers should be harshly reprimanded and put through proper training again along with some kind of probation period.
The police chief should be out of there. There's no excuse for what looked like every officer within radio signal distance showing up in a vest with a drawn gun. There didn't seem to be any protocol or discipline involved.
I don't think much accountability is going to happen, sadly. At worst, I've seen headlines calling this, 'dramatic.' The cops are hedging about who shot whom, saying it's going to be a 'complicated investigation.' When they are investigating themselves, that sound a bit disingenuous.
I know we must have DU members who are police or involved in law enforcement, and I know it's a voluntary job that can be extremely dangerous, adrenaline is a thing, etc. I'm not going to say that all police suck or whatever, but it is obvious that law enforcement in this country has some serious problems with how they perceive their role in society, as well as how they perceive the people they are supposed to be protecting. In this event, it really shows and it is ugly.
