The difficulty for them is squaring their non-conservative actions with their purported conservative base. That hasn't been as difficult as they initially surmised, as the base simply wants to hate liberals and could care less whether the national debt has expanded or retracted; whether we're North Korea's foe or friend; whether abortion rights are protected or eliminated. The base has no true moral compass, and upon this realization the Senators are feasting at Putin's teat and simply tossing out red meat in the form of liberal-hating bullshit conspiracy theories for their constituents, who willingly lap it up.
