In SW Florida this week, I saw many, many boats go by proudly flying Trump flags. However you feel about the guy in the White House, have we ever had a time in history where private citizens displayed FLAGS of our elected leader? This seems seriously weird.

(66,462 posts)For me, 'Florida' is a metonym for everything sleazy, squalid, low-rent, and unsavory. I'm glad there's a continent between me and that state...

(5,234 posts)Why do supposedly good Democrats generalize and hate everything attached to it? Florida is beautiful and a place where many want to be when the winds of winter blow. I thought only Republicans were that way.

The intention would have been to keep to the west of the coast of Scotland and Ireland in the relative safety of the open sea. There being no way of accurately measuring longitude, the Spanish were not aware that the Gulf Stream was carrying them north and east as they tried to move west and they eventually turned south much closer to the coast than they thought. Off Scotland and Ireland, the fleet ran into a series of powerful westerly winds which drove many of the damaged ships further toward the lee shore. Because so many anchors had been abandoned during the escape from the English fire-ships off Calais, many of the ships were incapable of securing shelter as the fleet reached the coast of Ireland and were driven onto the rocks and local inhabitants looted the ships. The late 16th century and especially 1588 was marked by unusually strong North Atlantic storms, perhaps associated with a high accumulation of polar ice off the coast of Greenland, a characteristic phenomenon of the "Little Ice Age".[52] More ships and sailors were lost to cold and stormy weather than in direct combat.

In England, a medal was struck with the inscription "Flavit Jehovah et Dissipati Sunt", which translates as "Jehovah blew with His winds, and they were scattered".
Armada Medal, bearing the inscription Flavit Jehovah et Dissipati SuntThe wind that scattered the Armada has been called the Protestant Wind,[57] a phrase also used for later navy attacks favorable to the Protestant cause that were helped by the wind. "

(25,183 posts)they have a point, but as everybody should know, Florida is a swing state, so Presidential votes count big time there. Our job is to get that message out to progressive voters in that part of Florida.
I'm sure there were a lot of GOP voters in 2016 in blue states who said, "Why bother voting for Trump, Hillary Clinton is going to win my state's electoral votes, anyway?" Trump will be only too happy to remind them that he needs their votes, too, because this time he wants a popular vote victory as well as an EC triumph.
Fox News will do everything it can to rally Trump humpers in CA, NY, etc.

(82,383 posts)I vote in every statehouse election though the district is dark red (middle class, so incomprehensible, they are temporarily embarrassed millionaires, I suppose). It lets them know what percentage don't agree. In 2018 they ran a Democrat, for once, and she got 47% of the vote, so that showed them it may be getting competitive. They won't know that if they win by a landslide when no one votes.
When they had not run a Dem, 17% at least voted for a Green candidate who ventured in.
When there was only the Republican on the ballot, I did a write-in.

(7,434 posts)It's logical and inevitable. That yacht owners parade Trumpy flags is no surprise. They're cocksure that Trumpy butters their bread. But that's no guarantee that he's not lying to them.
Come to think of it, Trumpy is DEFINITELY lying to them because lying is Trumpy's bread and butter. Lying is the only tool in his toolbox.
