(33,419 posts)Listen to any NPR interview with a GOP house member (usually at 20 minutes after the hour on Morning Edition). You'll hear every one of them do it. Mike Rogers did it this morning.
It's gaslighting as a science.

(9,500 posts)Trump's insistence that the released phone transcript with Zelensky was "perfect" is gas lighting. He is in essence trying to psych people out into believing the transcript exonerates him when it does the opposite.
I suppose a gish gallop could include gas lighting, but I don't think it's a necessary component. But to be honest, I never took a class in rhetoric.

(25,986 posts)Schiff even made note before the session started that the mics are sensitive. Somebody didn't listen or doesn't care that he is strident, whiny and overly loud is not compelling or persuasive.
Wow, he is rude! His tone is so insulting and rude. It's just not how this should be done.

Folks like that speak fast to move the other person into an area where they are uncomfortable and not thinking clearly.
The key is to slow them down, not feel pressured to speak faster, which is a natural response.
Make them repeat what they say, asking them to speak slower. If they still speak fast, make them repeat it again. They will only try that shit once or twice before they realize you aren't falling into their trap. Often, the one asking the questions will be the one thrown off, as they have to slow down.

(14,088 posts)His fast talking and confusing sentences probably work on people who are not used to speaking in public. They didn't confuse or flabbergast Ambassador Taylor. He never came close to making a point.
