Fish Shop Shut Down for Using Googly Eyes to Make Fish Look Fresher

In George Bernard Shaws play Back to Methuselah, that Old Testament serpent tells his Garden of Eden neighbor Eve, You see things and you say Why? But I dream things that never were and I say Why not? Robert F. Kennedy (or at least his speechwriters) changed the wording slightly and used it in a campaign speech in 1968. And last week, the owner of a fish shop in Kuwait brought those words to life, by dreaming up an idea to make his past-its-prime fish look fresher, pasting some googly eyes over their yellowing sockets, and asking Why the hell not?
The shop was closed by Kuwaits Ministry of Commerce and Industry after a widely shared Facebook video revealed the owners scam. (Were admittedly torn about this, because theres nothing funny about foodborne illness, but googly eyes are HILARIOUS. And, rotten or not, those fish are 100-percent more entertaining than The Happytime Murders.) In the ten-second clip, a woman uses her gloved finger to remove the fishs fake eye, revealing its own sunken, yellowed eyeball. According to Gulf News, if a fish has yellow, recessed eyes, its more than two days old and less-than-fresh.

Also remember, those commercial deep ocean trawlers are out in the ocean for a month.
You want to hope that your fish is the later caught ones.
That's why smaller fishing operations are best.
Unfortunately, the EU are trying to shut most day-fishers down because Europeans like fresh fish (go wonder) and the commercial fishing industry are clobbering the mom & pop fishers.

(23,337 posts)we put googly eyes on various items in retail stores and sit back and wait for someone to do a double take. We laugh and laugh and laugh. I keep a few packs of googly eyes in by glove box in case we feel the urge when out running errands. My personal favorite is diaper boxes:

(23,337 posts)I noticed down thread that someone suggested putting google eyes on MF45 juniors book cover. The child and I just made a plan to hit Barnes and Noble after school Thursday...stealth mode. What a great idea!

(17,196 posts)I'd picked out a coat rack for my new apartment, but I still needed a few bucks to get the $25 free shipping (yeah, I'm cheap). A quick look shows that I can get hundreds -- count 'em, hundreds! -- of self-adhesive googly eyes for under $10! So, once I get the coat rack assembled (probably sometime mid-December) I can get to work pasting them EVERYWHERE! (I'm easily amused.)
