The turnout in Kentucky was up 150%. That bodes well for the rest of the country. Turnout is key to 2020. The resistance needs to help facilitate this. Register voters, knock on doors, make calls, etc.

(206,072 posts)Though I have been known to vote for a third party candidate in local races if otherwise it would be a Republican running unopposed. That's the problem in a Republican controlled district, for years the Democrats didn't even field a candidate for Congress. I know two of our local Democratic candidates personally so I'm hoping for good news tonight - and I've spread the word whenever I got the chance.

(14,494 posts)that yes, if a candidate is proven enough of a radical and adequately called out for it, some Republicans will vote for a Democrat.
Just look at the margins for our other races. Rethugs won by substantial margins. In normal times, I believe most voters vote straight party ticket. However, in this case it appears a large number of Republicans broke that habit and voted for individual offices on the ballot, with many voting for our candidate for governor or they may have simply not cast a vote for governor out of spite for Bevin.
I have not seen an analysis of the numbers in order to prove or disprove my hypothesis.

(22,270 posts)Many voters will only vote the top line on the ballot. SO in KY's case voters just picked someone for governor and didn't bother with anything else. There are many reasons people do this.. but mostly it is because they are more familiar with the top race on the ballot.
THis even holds true on a primary ballot. In 2016 many voters just voted that presidential line and did not vote in the other primaries on that ballot. We could tell when looking at our precinct reports so we might have 1000 ballots cast total and all 1000 of them did vote for president - but when you run the tallies on the other races and compare numbers you might find only 600 votes were cast in total for the state rep or state senate race on that ballot (for example)
I hope this makes sense, I am winding down from my long long day at the polls for the Great Texas Constitutional Amendment Vote. Our turnout was pretty high for this type of election I was shocked.

(14,494 posts)That's why a detailed analysis will be need to determine what caused the skewed vote only for governor, and you may be right.
And, thanks for your hard work in TX for our democracy.........
It does indeed depend on a village of volunteers!
