Supreme Court Lawyer Says Trump Will Be Impeached, Won't Even Be on 2020 Ballot
By James Crowley On 11/5/19 at 10:16 AM EST
Thought leaders from the CEO of Wikipedia to Edward Snowden gathered in Lisbon, Portugal on Monday for the 2019 Web Summit, an annual tech conference that brings together experts from a variety of fields to discuss emerging innovations and current events. On Day 2 of the summit Tuesday, three of the assembled great minds debated the prospect of regime change in the United States, with former Acting Solicitor General of the United States Neal Katyal telling the audience, "I don't think Trump will be on the ballot next year, I think he will be impeached."
The lawyer's "strong words" received "huge applause" from the audience, summit attendee and DW News journalist Jordan Wildon noted in a tweet.
Katyal was speaking on a panel with Joe Pounder, CEO of Bullpen Strategy Group; Brittany Kaiser, co-founder of Own Your Data Foundation and Tim Alberta, the chief political correspondent for Politico. The panel, titled "One year out: Will Trump be re-elected?" was part of the summit's "Centre Stage" programming. Exactly one year ahead of the 2020 presidential election, panel members spoke on data, trends, and gut reactions to predict what is "dubbed by many as the election which will define a generation."

(13,776 posts)And right now, although the evidence is piling up against him to such an extent that even some Senate Republicans might grow a spine, for the moment he's safe from removal, even if he's guaranteed to be impeached.
I wouldn't be surprised if he defected. Go to Turkey or Saudi Arabia or a friendly place like that on Air Force One and never get back on.

(23,251 posts)A) New York would be on him like grape juice on an Easter dress if he did; B) He enjoys the power and perks of the presidency; it "confirms" his perceived "greatness", And it gives him leverage over his enemies. It also gives him financial leverage for his business. He has little to no hesitation in violating any ethical constraints on that.

I think he'd be a great nominee for a Democratic president for SCOTUS - only 49 years old now

(3,922 posts)I like Neal and find his commentary on point most of the time, but this is strictly wishful thinking.
There is no evidence at this point that the #IPOTUS will be impeached in the Senate. Further, we really have to wonder what it would take for the Senate to turn since the Fifth Avenue scenario, coddling to Putin, overt racism, and a clear quid pro quo case re: Ukraine is apparently not doing the trick.
I'm skeptical that even the election will evict this disgrace from the White House.
I do remain hopeful, but I really don't see a clear path to impeachment/removal.
Hope I'm wrong.

(8,919 posts)the Senate Convicts.
Treat it as the House acts like a GRAND JURY and indicts (Articles of Impeachment) if it find enough evidence.
The Senate acts like the court where the Impeached is Tried.

that will probably be the most interesting part of this whole thing to watch. Seeing just how the senate will convict.

(33,356 posts)It takes 2/3 of those present to convict. If 20 Rs stay home that day because of a fear of drowning (I've read that rats fear drowning so much they will abandon ship before anyone else), that leaves 32 Rs, 45 Ds, 3 Is (counting Amash as I now). With 80 present, it takes 54 to convict. If all Ds and Is vote to convict, it only takes 6 Rs to go along.

(10,128 posts)The reason Trump pulled the stunt he did in the Ukraine is that he realized that he was unlikely to beat Biden otherwise. Getting caught appears to be having the reverse effect - he seems to be falling further behind Biden and the others.
The power brokers of the GOP will make the call on whether Trump is removed from office by the Senate. They control that decision - not Trump.
1. Do you think the power brokers of the GOP disagree about Trump's position with Biden?
2. Or do you think the power brokers of the GOP are more into loyalty to Trump than they are into hanging on to the power of the Oval Office? Trump before party?
3. Or do you think the power brokers of the GOP have concluded that out of all the possible candidates for the GOP, Trump gives the GOP the best chance to win in 2020?
Based on what we know and upon years of performance, I think those are all basically rhetorical questions because we already know the answers to them.
How Trump goes is a mystery. Resign? Bogus health excuse? Whatever. He's handy as a pinata for Dems to spend their time, money and energy on before they pull their switcheroo that minimizes the time to scrutinize their shiny "new" candidate.

(14,175 posts)In fact, he'll only go kicking and screaming. Even IF the Senate does the right thing. Because it makes great Reality TV. Maximum sympathy generation for his cult. And it will help back up his CT that it was some kind of coup.
All so he is set up in a good position to start his own media empire when he leaves. He may not even have to put up any of his own money for it. Like his buildings, he gets paid for agreeing they can stamp his name on the front, to increase its value and popularity. (which may not work so well in the future). But would work great for a deplorable run conspiracy theory network.

Your scenario is a strong argument for the Rosenberg remedy for treasonous acts. He would do anything for vengeance if left with any assets and power.

Trump will have to remove himself. Which we know is unlikely.
Unless these global folks know something Americans don't about American politics and global cyber powers, Katyal and the rest look as if they're fooling themselves.
Portugal is far from the USA as they speak of "data, trends and gut reactions and ... defining a generation." Given the on-the-ground fight the Republicans and their owners are waging over here, this comes across as some rah rah cheerleading at best, happy horseshit at worst.
