This is what I posted on Facebook today. I'll do the delete in a week. Unless you're dependent on Facebook for getting pictures of your grandchildren, or keeping up with valued friends and family, I encourage you to do the same.
Im inspired by SereneBabe*, but in my case its with the aim of adding to the pressure on Mark Zuckerberg to follow Twitters excellent example and not accept political advertising. That would easily solve the problem of whether or not an ad is a lie.
Since I only visit Facebook once or twice a month, and almost never post, this wont be a big sacrifice. But it will be one more data point in the #DeleteFacebook wave of people who say ENOUGH!

(102,357 posts)I am glad I never gave up my info to them. Good for you on your decision.
Now, given their greedy determination to allow overt political lies that can undermine voting and add to the horrendous conspiracy theories driving the division and paranoia in this country, I find the excuses for remaining on Facebook to be nothing more than self-serving. Sorry, FB-loving users and/or apologists, but you know on some level I am right.

(13,783 posts)... said that people should be able to make their own decisions about what is true and what is not. And just how are they supposed to do that? In the past we've relied on news purveyers to do some vetting for us. What are we supposed to do? Hire a stable of fact checkers???? Spend three hours doing research and give up our second job and let the kids get their own dinner? HE'S SO CLUELESS!!!!!

(11,443 posts)It had turned into a cesspool of lies and conspiracy theories from the repuke side of my friends and relatives. Trying to get off Facebook was almost a bigger pain than getting rid of AOL back around 1999. They make it a difficult process.

(68 posts)it's hard. People organize events on Facebook and they are events I can sell my books at in person, which I plan to do once this one I'm working on is finished.
I find twitter more useful for getting an audience for my work though.
