Garth Brooks Got Called Out by Jimmy Carter for Taking Break During Habitat for Humanity Build

Even Garth Brooks admits to not being able to keep up with former president Jimmy Carter‘s unshakable stamina.

During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Friday, the country star, 57, shared a story working on a Habitat for Humanity housing build alongside 95-year-old Carter.

“We were in Haiti, right, working on the roof — been working on the roof all day long — and they’re metal roofs, it’s 115 degrees. And when you get a roof on, the great thing is now the house has a roof, you can go down and stand underneath it, get two seconds of shade,” Brooks told host Ellen DeGeneres on the show. “In my two seconds, the president walked in. I sit there, and he goes, ‘You need something to do, Garth?’ “

Laughing about the encounter, Brooks added: “I said ‘No, sir,’ [and] jumped right back out there again.”

Pretty bad when a 95 year old guy can outwork you.

The real difference is in their "moral fitness".

Trump wouldn't carry a tissue across the room to save someone's life if there wasn't something self beneficial about the 43 seconds he would take.

As for helping anyone from Haiti, he would prefer it that all Haitans walk into the sea so he could sell time shares to Canadians.

So I can jokingly vouch for him. He was doing good like only he can.

It was a at a large bar in the small town of Rootstown that somehow crammed in 700 fans, all of whom won their tix on local radio stations. Everyone except Ohio governor Mike Dewine (R of course) who shamelessly weaseled his way in for some reason. Last winter Brooks put his triple live album online for anyone who wanted it for free.

The concert was a stop on his "Dive Bar Tour"

Garth Brooks and Jimmy Carter share values that are rarely seen. Good company.

I learned to work under guys of his generation.

"Daylight's burning, boy."
"Waitin' for the work to come to you?"
"At least stand in a strain while you're restin'."
"Hurry up every chance you get."
"Is your hammer wore out?"
"Need some help catchin' your breath?"

rare in the country music scene. Look at how the Dixie Chicks were persecuted for that very mild jab at GWB. Their careers were practically ruined.

On edit:

Plus, Yearwood's "Sweet and Saltines" aka "Christmas Crack" is absolutely addicting and soooooo easy.

It is nice to see a flattering post on DU about anyone country music.

It is also nice to hear about someone of his celebrity understand President Carter has earned "sir" millions of times over.

And President Carter is a generation older than me. I have no doubt he could out work me any day.

When he was "retired" and living north of Tulsa while his kids were in school. He would do the occasional interview or TV show but wanted his kids to have as normal a life as they could. He knew he was coming back though and decided to go local for a website shop and chose the small one I worked for at the time (we had won some awards for design).

He is a super-sweet guy - and very savvy. He came in to talk to us after normal working hours about what he wanted, and he would say things like, "Garth wouldn't do that," or, "Garth would handle that in this manner..." Talking in the third person may sound egotistical, but it was a shorthand way for him to talk about things when dealing with his professional image. While we worked on the site, he and Tricia would drop in sometimes to see how things were going and take us out to eat, and he would always make time for fans.

The best thing was that he flew the boss, another programmer, and me out to Nashville on a small private jet so we could talk with the programmers from a merchandise clearinghouse that would be handling shipping out the products ordered on his website, and he and Tricia joined us on the trip back to Tulsa. He told us funny stories about Nashville and got us all involved in solving a Crossword Puzzle he was doing. When we landed, we all took individual pictures with him and Tricia in front of the jet. Our "Look-at-what-big-shots-we-are" pics. Mine was my Christmas card that year that I sent out to friends and family... which drove them crazy because...

I didn't - and still don't - know any of his songs other than, "Friends in Low Places." Not a country fan.

Thanks for sharing. Loved the personal interaction tale of someone like that, because it can go the other way with big stars.

I grew up a few miles from where he did. I'm not a country fan either but appreciate his humanity. One of the biggest selling music artists of all time yet has worked hard to maintain his values in spite of all the success and adoration.

Yearwood told a story on Ken Burns doc about Garth driving from Oklahoma to that big fan convention in
Nashville, spontaneous and in his own pickup. Got there without a tent or any fanfare and just started signing autographs and taking pics with fans - for 20 hours.

I’m sure President Carter saw Garth working his ass off in the debilitating heat. He was joking. But it gave Garth a great story to tell about his admiration for Carter.
