I think the fact that Hill resigned and Hunter is still in office speaks volumes about the republican party and its supporters. They don't care at all about the rule of law or personal integrity. They don't care if their members are corrupt, unfaithful, liars, or stealing other people's money for personal enrichment. They care that someone is an R and not a D, and that is all. That is a cult.

It's also a societal problem. Hill resigned, in part according to her statement, because of threats she received. I think there is also some fear of her soon-to-be-but-not-soon-enough ex-husband and what he might do to her. Duncan Hunter doesn't appear to be in any fear that someone's going to ice him anytime soon, so brazening it out right up until the "How do you find the defendant" question is a low-risk strategy.
