Duckworth casts vote holding newborn on Senate floor after rule change

Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., an Iraq veteran and double leg amputee, made Senate history as she was wheeled onto the Senate floor Thursday and cast a vote while cradling her tiny infant daughter Maile.

snip

Just the night before, the United States Senate — a body steeped in tradition that rarely changes its ways — passed a rule change proposed by Duckworth that will allow her, and any woman of the Senate, to bring babies onto the floor and breastfeed them as needed.

Duckworth was met on the floor by a round of applause from her colleagues, who crowded around to congratulate her and greet her daughter.

The resolution, passed by unanimous consent, will allow all senators, men and women, to bring children under the age of one onto the floor.

In a statement released Wednesday, Duckworth thanked her Democratic and Republican colleagues for “helping bring the Senate into the 21st Century by recognizing that sometimes new parents also have responsibilities at work.”

adda Tammy Duckworth was born on March 12, 1968, in Bangkok, Thailand, to a mother of Chinese heritage and a father of British descent. Because her father did refugee work for the United Nations, Duckworth's childhood took place against varied backdrops—spanning Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia and Hawaii.

Duckworth—along with her mother, Lamai, and her father, Franklin—moved to Hawaii as a teenager. After high school, Duckworth earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Hawaii. Afterward, she obtained her Master of Arts in international affairs at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. In pursuit of yet more higher education, Duckworth then relocated to Illinois, where she enrolled in a political science Ph.D. program at Northern Illinois University.

snip

Following her injuries, Duckworth was promoted to major and awarded the Purple Heart. During her year's recovery time at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, she became an activist, advocating for better medical care for wounded veterans and their families. Duckworth presented her impassioned views to Congress, testifying on two separate occasions.

snip

History-Making Congresswoman
In 2012, Duckworth took a second shot at a seat in Congress, as a Democrat representing Illinois, and won. Her victory was twofold: Not only did Duckworth now have the platform to advance her political agenda, but she also became a living example for fellow female veterans, as the first disabled woman ever to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Tammy Duckworth rips IRS contractor for seeking disabled status

“Does your foot hurt,” Duckworth asked Castillo. “My feet hurt too. In fact, the balls of my feet burn continuously, and I feel like there’s a nail being hammered into my heel right now. So I can understand pain and suffering, and how service connection can actually cause long-term, unremitting, unyielding, unstoppable pain.”

Duckworth read from a letter Castillo sent to a government official in which he describes the severe pains from his foot injury as “crosses that I bear in my service to our great country. And I would do it again to protect this great country.”

“I’m so glad that you would be willing to play football in prep school again to protect this great country,” said Duckworth. “Shame on you, Mr. Castillo. Shame on you. You may not have broken any laws… But you certainly broke the trust of this great nation. You broke the trust of veterans.”

“Iraq and Afghanistan veterans right now are waiting an average of 237 days for an initial disability rating, and it is because people like you who are gaming the system are adding to that backlog so that young men and women who are suffering from post-traumatic stress, who are missing limbs, cannot get the compensation and the help that they need.”

“You, who never picked up a weapon in defense of this great nation, very cynically took advantage of the system. You broke the faith with this nation. You broke the faith with the men and women who lie in hospitals right now.”

“Twisting your ankle in prep school is not defending or serving this nation, Mr. Castillo,” the congresswoman concluded.

Tammy Duckworth, Who Lost Both Legs in Iraq, Offers to Take These Fools Hunting to Talk Gun Control
She also hid her phone in her prosthetic leg.

Whenever anyone writes about Illinois representative Tammy Duckworth, they're almost obligated to start with her résumé: She holds multiple doctorate degrees and is the first Asian-American woman elected to Congress in Illinois. She's a veteran of the Iraq war and lost both of her legs when a rocket-propelled grenade took out the helicopter she was piloting, earning her a Purple Heart. And if I had to wager a guess, she's probably the first rep to hide her phone in a prosthetic leg so that it wouldn't be taken away during a Democrat sit-in to demand a vote on gun control.

On Wednesday, Duckworth joined other House Democrats for a 16-hour sit-in to call for a vote on gun measures in the wake of Orlando. When Republicans, led by House Speaker Paul Ryan, opted to turn off the C-Span cameras, Democrats used their phones to fire up Periscope, Twitter, and other apps to distribute their message to the masses. Per the Chicago Tribune:

"Chicago is going through an epidemic of gun violence that is horrific," Duckworth said. "It is absolutely horrific."
The Hoffman Estates lawmaker, who is challenging Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., said there were more powerful weapons on U.S. streets than the standard Army rifles given to soldiers when she served in Iraq.

Had a baby, went to the floor and got a bill passed so women could breast feed there. Amazing courage.

And Duckworth? An amazing human being. Whenever I see her I think how admirable she is, and how strong her character. What a great example for little girls like my granddaughters!

I think the worm is turning for Republicans. I mean, look at Nichole Wallace calling out Laura Ingraham, John Yoo, and Sean Duffy for being 'chickenshit' at calling Vindman's patriotism into question. They are chickenshit, and people are beginning to see this.
