As nearly everyone on this board is aware, the evidence against Trump in the upcoming

impeachment trial will be overwhelming. It is not a matter of "What counts can we prove?", but, rather "How many and which of the dozens of possible Articles of Impeachment should we file?" It is, therefore, understandable that many seem to think that the GOP Senate will surely convict Trump.

I think, though, that it is entirely possible---if not likely--- that the Republican Senators will not care at all what testimony or other evidence proves. They are going go vote against conviction because they are scared shitless of the base of their own party. Each of them understands that some of their voters truly believe that a vote against Trump is treason and Trump has already made it clear that execution is the appropriate penalty for treason. The mildest penalty that they can imagine for opposing Trump is a well-financed primary opponent who would probably be backed by their own party. They will not give a damn what evidence is presented. Our outrage at their lack of ethics and concern for our nation will delight them; will be the icing on their impeachment cake.

Honor? Patriotism? Statesmanship? Surely you jest.

The best chance for a Senate conviction of Trump is that somehow "We the people" literally bring enough political pressure to bear that will convince 20 Republicans that WE are a bigger threat to their survival than Dear Leader. I think that is possible, but not probable. Apathy is just too fashionable.

I would love to be 100% wrong.

...in the Senate to convict but still short of the necessary two/thirds.

But a simple majority would take the claim that Trump has been exonerated or acquitted. They could only say that the Democrats did not have enough votes to convict.

So their party is stuck. They deserve everything that happens because of it.

Their staffs are probably busy tallying up the yays and nays from their constituents. They don’t want to be attacked by one of their own when they go home for recess.
