a gay President?
a woman President?
a Muslim President?
a Hispanic President?
Aren't these really silly questions?

(1,176 posts)I dont care their gender, religion, or race, or who it is they love. As long as they are honest, and will _work_ for all Americans, they'll get my vote.

(10,875 posts)Muslim would be the toughest sell, then gay, then woman, then Hispanic.
But, all would be eclipsed by an open Atheist. I dont think we will ever see that.

(1,896 posts)We're definitely ready for that. Honest? That too. Forward thinking and progressive? I'd like that. Beyond those things, I really don't care about anything else they might be described as.

(11,738 posts)For all our mythology about a "melting pot" and of diversity and liberty, we are sadly populated by many bigots. There have been times where bigotry was looked down upon, but in the Trump presidency, it has made a comeback. While a person's gender, sexual orientation, religion, and nationality or ethnic background certainly informs their perspective of the world, they are not and should never be disqualifying factors for public office. For some people however, and not a small group, the idea of a woman president or a gay person, or a Muslim, or someone who identifies as Latino means a "foreign" person making choices for "real" Americans. It is scary.
So, yes they are definitely silly, stupid questions, but sadly, they still have importance to too many Americans.
