(146,308 posts)Trump impeachment situation. I was glued to the TV for both the Nixon and Clinton hearings. You'll want to watch. It's live history.

(18,770 posts)Interestingly, a player from the Clinton impeachment rears his head in the Trump/Ukraine saga... Bob Livingston!

(42,331 posts)I was 15 during the Watergate hearings. I watched as much as I could. Even then, I knew it was history. I also devoured "All the President's Men.

(115,693 posts)It's not a criminal trial so the same rules about a defendant not having to testify don't apply. What if he's called as a witness? He thinks he's smarter than everybody else, and despite his lawyers' warnings I can imagine him wanting to put on a show before the Senate and rant about the Deep State and how it's all so unfair. And he'll dig his own grave with his word salad (and there's a seriously mixed metaphor for ya). And who will represent him? Rudy? That would be even more fun to watch.

(146,308 posts)But, he'll Tweet. Oh, yes...he'll Tweet!

(115,693 posts)But he could testify if he wanted to, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he wanted to.
MineralMan
(146,308 posts)I doubt if we'll hear from him in the hearings. He'll have plenty to say on Twitter, though.

(11,495 posts)one thing about a narcissist, they "think" they are smarter than everyone else, superior in every way from others. They think they can lie their way out of anything, and people will believe them. The problem is they are not the person they think they are, and as in trumps case, people may be afraid of him, but the vast majority can't stand him.
If trump does decide to speak out, he will not get the reaction he thinks.

(28,394 posts)I was a young stay-at-home mom during Watergate and I watched it every day.
I didnt pay as much attention to the Clinton hearings because I was working. Actually, I think I wanted to ignore it. It was pretty depressing.

(68,576 posts)Rockefeller Republican became a Democrat and my Mom the independent also became a Democrat during the Clinton impeachment. They felt the GOP was out to get Clinton and were playing partisan politics. Both my parents were involved in civil rights...and Dad was GOP...my how the parties have changed...ours for the better the GOP well they went to the dark side.

(146,308 posts)is that when news breaks, you can keep an eye on it. I've been self-employed since 1974, and have worked from a home office most of the time since then. Even when my wife and I rented office space, though, we had a TV in our rented office suite.

(115,693 posts)but the televised hearings we all remember (if we're old) weren't the Nixon impeachment hearings in the House in 1974, but the Senate Watergate investigation hearings in 1973. For the most part the actual impeachment hearings were not televised. I listened to the Clinton hearings on the radio. What a farce that was.
MineralMan
(146,308 posts)It all played into the eventual resignation, though. I'll be looking forward to upcoming public hearings on the Ukrainegate matter. Or, should it be called "Morongate?"

(2,220 posts)Summer of 1973, between freshman and sophomore years. I remember my best friend and I would go to the pool for a few hours every day, then come home, make spaghetti, and watch the Senate hearings. I dont know why we watched them other than we hated Nixon and wanted to see what Mo Dean was wearing.
The night Nixon resigned, I was at the county fair with my boyfriend watching the Hurricane Hell Drivers. They interrupted the show and broadcast the speech over the rickety PA system. We cheered. Cant imagine anyone in my home county doing that today. It is deep, scary Trump country now.
During the Clinton hearings, I was working full-time and being a busy new stepmother and band wife, so only knew what I heard listening to NPR while making the work commute and what my mother, a devout Democrat and news junkie, called to tell me.
Now Im retired. Im sure Ill watch every day..maybe make spaghetti, too!

(56,828 posts)I don't really remember much with Clinton because I knew the charges were Trumped Up BS
I remember Watergate as a kid - I just hated coming home from elementary school and having my afternoon cartoons interrupted by Nixon's misdeeds.

Let's just say, I'm not numb any more. GO NANCY!

(33,346 posts)I didn't watch much of the Nixon hearings because it was clear he was a crook before his re-election. Couldn't believe people voted that scoundrel back into office. (Us McGovern voters were lonely).
