Florida's election system preps for daily attacks

I wonder who is behind these hacking attempts, and if it's happening in other states.
Why can't we have hand-counted paper ballots?

Florida’s election system is under daily attack, Florida’s chief election official conceded Tuesday, but the state has employed what she called an “unprecedented” program of training, assessment and evaluations designed to address the weaknesses before harm is done.

Speaking to the annual meeting of reporters and editors sponsored by The Associated Press, Secretary of State Laurel Lee refused to elaborate on what vulnerabilities the agency has identified. She would say that training of election officials, and increasing awareness about both physical and cyber security — such as downloading proper updates to software operating systems — remains an important priority.

“Every single day, domestic actors and foreign actors attempt to penetrate our Department of State networks and the networks of supervisors of elections around our state,’’ Lee said. “So it is critical that we have been able to develop and implement this type of partnership.”

Gov. Ron DeSantis launched the unprecedented review of the security of its elections system in May, months after being blindsided by the report by Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller that indicated that two of Florida’s local elections offices were hacked ahead of the 2016 presidential election....

While it seemed obvious that our state would be targeted like this, I didn't know it was at this level of frequency.

A particularly alarming hack was carried out at the DEFCON hackathon conference over the weekend by an 11-year-old boy.

He managed to hack into an imitation Florida state voting website and change the results of the “election” in fewer than 10 minutes.

DEFCON is the world’s larger hacker conference held annually in Las Vegas, where hackers and cyber security experts try to break into all kinds of computer security systems, highlighting how easy it can be to manipulate software and hardware. At this year’s conference, DefCon added children to its list of those invited, specifically to try to hack websites in the DEFCON Voting Machine Hacking Village, a part of the hackathon that includes “13 imitation websites linked to voting in presidential battleground states,” according to PBS.

More than one succeeded.
