Abramson: Trump "has a gun to the head of the GOP," will start new party if GOP betrays him

Interesting tweets from Seth Abramson minutes ago, starting here (full text of thread below):

I'll say it until I'm blue in the face: Republicans up and down the line and in and out of DC are trashing any semblance of integrity they ever had because Trump has a gun to the head of the GOP and will pull the trigger and start a new far-right populist party if it betrays him

PS/ There should be *no* confusion over why Republicans are acting in a way that disgraces them, their children, their grandchildren and their party: Republicans believe they're in an all-out war for the longterm survival of the GOP, as Trump can end the party whenever he chooses

PS2/ Or, if it makes it easier to conceptualize, there *is* no GOP, so any individuals from what *used* to be the GOP wrongly identifying as such have to become Democrats, stop caring about politics, or ride out Trumpism until the moment years on they can safely betray the Trumps

PS3/ However you slice it, the fact remains you have a large number of people who've identified themselves, their value, and their work in the world by an idea called "Republicanism" that no longer exists, and all these folks now consider themselves to be in an existential crisis

PS4/ In any case, American media should be *very* clearly articulating the fact that what's currently called the "Republican Party" bears *no* relationship on any point of domestic or foreign policy to the *historic* Republican Party that existed in the U.S. up through early 2015

And deserve the thrashing they're about to receive. The smart(er) ones already announced retirements. The dumber ones will be disgraced, if not jailed.

to get him to wave the Pee Pee Kompromat in Trump's face to get Golden Mario Kart to behave.

What long standing relationship has Trump ever had that ended well?

Eventually, the KGOP will get what they deserve for backing this criminal.

It would allow the rest of the Republicans to return their party to being a decent and honorable one. And it would split the vote for years to come.

I think a lot of people, especially here on DU, just don't understand to what extent a lot of self-identified Republicans will never vote for a Democrat for President. Never. No matter how terrible their nominee.

(Similarly, all of us have to ask ourselves how terrible would our candidate have to be not to vote for him or her? But that's another thread entirely)

So the decent Republicans get their party back. And the true right wing nut cases have their own party. Lucky us, all of us.

Among the reasons the Libertarians or the Green Party or any other third party you want to name are highly unsuccessful is that they don't do the grass-roots building up they need to make a Presidential nominee even remotely viable. Right now there are no official independents in the House of Representatives, and two official Independents in the Senate, both of whom caucus with Democrats. So no matter how much people complain, we are firmly a two party system and are likely to remain so into the foreseeable future.

Which is why Trump breaking off and starting his own party would actually be a good thing. In my opinion.

And join the Democrats to take away Moscow Mitch's hold on the power of the senate, and trump will be done. There will not be enough there to have power for him.
