With GM workers back on the job, UAW turns to Ford

With the strike at General Motors over, the United Auto Workers union has turned its attention to securing a new contract with Ford Motor Co.

As with GM, the outcome of the UAW's negotiations with Ford will have local impact. Ford's Woodlawn plant has 987 hourly workers represented by UAW Local 897, according to the automaker. Companywide, the UAW represents about 55,000 Ford workers. Negotiators for Ford and the UAW met in Dearborn, Mich., on Monday.

The Route 5 plant opened in 1950 and makes stamped metal parts for a variety of Ford vehicles, including the Edge, Nautilus, Flex, MKT, F-150, Super Duty, Mustang, Econoline, Expedition, Navigator and Continental. Like GM's two area plants, Ford's Woodlawn plant is an important element of the region's auto manufacturing sector.

The UAW has a history of "pattern bargaining" with the Detroit Three automakers. The union chooses one of the automakers to negotiate a deal with first, and then seeks to secure contracts with similar terms at the other two automakers.
