The White House announced Tuesday that it won't be renewing its subscriptions to The New York Times and Washington Post, after President Donald Trump had a meltdown at both newspapers during an appearance on Fox News' "Hannity."
The 45th President described the NYT as "a false newspaper," saying "we don't want it in the White House anymore," even though he gave the paper and its publisher an exclusive interview in the Oval Office earlier this year.
"We're going to probably terminate that and the Washington Post. They're fake," Trump told Hannity, who frequently spins conspiracy and "deep state" theories on his program.
The decision by the White House not to renew subscriptions is not without precedent.
Then-Vice President Richard Nixon several times canceled his subscription to the Washington Post during the 1950s, infuriated at his treatment by the paper's Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Herbert Block ("Herblock" . Herblock was there to cover Nixon's impeachment investigation and resignation.
After the Washington Post published the Pentagon Papers, Nixon as president ordered that Post reporters be banned from the White House. The order was not carried out. Trump has not taken similar action -- yet!
