I will admit that I am often deeply impressed by the consistent, serious wisdom regularly provided by many of the regulars on this board. Others can be counted on to post something that will bring a smile or even a chuckle to many of us who desperately need one. Still others are always reminding us that tolerance, kindness and love of our fellow men and women is what we are supposed to be about. Finally, there are those who freely voice their anger and indignation at what they see as the traitorous behavior of Trump and his cult.
I am of an age when the satisfaction of speaking my mind easily outweighs the lifelong conditioning to avoid embarrassment at all costs. Some days I am optimistic and enthusiastic and post encouragement to "fight the good fight". On other days, I am down in the dumps and may do nothing but moan and complain. And, sometimes I just feel silly and crack a joke, share a poem or pen new lyrics for a "golden oldie". Some days I hit it out of the park. Some days I shoot myself in the foot.
In short, I am consistently inconsistent---and that bothers me not. I wake up each morning in an area in which nearly four of each five residents voted for Trump. I see MAGA caps when I shop and "Dixie swastikas" and worse on the vehicles I pass on the street. I have been ridiculed, cursed and threatened for the "sin" of wearing an "Impeach Trump" tee in public.
And, so, here, among friends, I am unapologetically my stubborn, graying, erratic self. Thank you for the island of sanity and tolerance you provide.

(14,961 posts)comfortable expressing our opinions without feeling the need to defend ourselves. I too live in a red area. I just moved, I now live in Matt Gaetz's district and believe me it is just how you would think.

(6,831 posts)saddled with Gaetz (R-Breathalyzer), too. What a train wreck. More like a three-ring circus.
My last duty station was Pensacola, but that was long before Baby Gaetz climbed into Daddy's shoes.

(51,308 posts)Ive only seen one MAGA hat in the last few years. I do see pro-gun bumper stickers.
I drive a Subaru with obviously liberal stickers. No ones ever verbally assaulted me. Im sorry youve experienced that.
But NC is generally a friendly place, so maybe thats why.

(15,557 posts)Sometimes I can't believe how many of my posts contain swear words, even if I do use asterisks sometimes in the place of the letters. If you met me in person you'd know that I rarely use swear words in front of other people, unless I really, really know them well enough to know it won't offend. The situation we find ourselves in at this point in history has driven me to not even recognize myself any longer! I've also resorted to name calling and one-line posts because I honestly have run out of ways to describe Trump. Some days I can't even read any more of the craziness, so I do a quick perusal of DU headlines and then stop because there's only so much I can take without wanting to scream.
Anyway, I suspect a lot of us on here feel the same way. Recently a new poster stated that he/she was a bit disappointed in DU because he came here expecting a lot of good intellectual policy discussions and all he was seeing were one line comments or jokes or whatever else he said he found. I thought about that a lot and came to the conclusion that yes, maybe we do a lot of that these days, but I equated it to criticizing someone on the Titanic just running around and yelling curt orders while the ship is slowly sinking instead of analyzing what happened to make the ship start sinking. Right now I think we just don't have the energy to discuss ad nauseum (because we've already done that) how this happened to our country.

(53,410 posts)Thats an idiotic demand.
If a new person wants to give this site a try to see if it fulfills some personal standard then they can easily lurk and figure it out without barging in to make some rules for a long established site.
Also, with a tiny bit of effort they can figure out which posters are the ones who do post and invite discussions.
It also helps to understand the wise use of links that do flesh out and corroborate the opinions of DUers.

(63,221 posts)It's a nice reminder that it takes all kinds and everyone brings something to the table. We all have our moments, both good and bad. It's nice to have a place like DU to come to when it all gets to be too much out there.

(19,204 posts)and all that. I find myself in much the same situation, and DU has been an oasis of sanity (for the most part) since the republicans stole the election from Al Gore.

(19,204 posts)I even took the family to Toronto in 1999 to watch a live taping for a future show. We got to meet 'Red', 'Harold' (Patrick McKenna), and 'Edgar Montrose' (Graham Green from "Dances with Wolves" fame). We had a ball. Good clean fun, and hilarious!
