Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI worry that if Trump survives the impeachment trial we could be in even worse danger than now.
We had better hope that the impeachment charges against Trump are egregious enough to sway even Republicans and he is removed from office. If he remains, I believe he could be an even bigger danger than he is now.
Up to now the threat of being removed from office has been hanging over his head. It has been a control of sorts even though he has been unbelievably bold in defying the Constitution.
If he survives he will be absolved of wrongdoing and so embolden to double down on even more criminal operations.
Essentially he will be given carte blanche to run the government in any self serving way he wants because the impeachment threat will be gone.
His only concern will be winning in November and with his new freedom he could become even more wildly lawless and uncontrollable. He could order every kind of vote rigging scheme his toadies could think up without concern for consequences to himself.
Even if he loses on November 3, he will have 2 1/2 months before the new president is sworn in. With nothing left to lose who knows what he would do. He would certainly want to cash in on everything he could before leaving. Might he make a fortune secretly selling off America's top secrets? Who knows?
So if we have to wait until the next election to remove him, it will be difficult to win and even if Trump loses there will be a period afterwards where he could be a serious danger to the future of the country.
I'm glad they aren't rushing into the impeachment trial. They really need to gather as much damning evidence as possible in the hopes that the volume of crimes will turn even Republicans against him.
If not the future is very uncertain.

(1,773 posts)Or disgusting. He'll gnash his little teeth and send spittle flying everywhere as he snarls and angrily swipes his little claws, but he'll go down eventually.
The question then becomes who does he take down with him? What national secrets does he reveal in his political death throes, so to speak? How much damage will he inflict on our nation as his ship starts taking water and sinks?
It will be quite the spectacle, that's for sure.
Lock him up.
(6,944 posts)Remember we have not seen the un-redacted version of the Mueller Report, nor any of the GJ materials. Barr is sitting on ALL of it.

(5,502 posts)I think we need to take our best shot when we impeach him. Once we get into 2020 the primaries need to be the focus. We need a candidate that will inspire the country.

(51,638 posts)no matter what Congress does. He will steal as much as possible then destroy the rest. He has zero love for this country. He loves himself and his money. Period.

(5,502 posts)Once he is actually impeached, the Senate Republicans are going to have to take a long, hard look. It will be very telling.
Lock him up.
(6,944 posts)Including obstruction of Congress, witness tempering, and coverup (let's hope).
If so, they better measure their own consequences (they don't care about the country).
