Don't call it a comeback...That's not a bounce; it's a hiccup.

Don't call it a comeback

By Steve Benen

With only nine weeks remaining in the presidential election, Republicans clearly hoped their national convention would give Mitt Romney a bounce that would leave him better positioned for November. So far, that's not even close to happening.

I put together this chart showing the last eight days of Gallup's daily tracking poll, including the results released this afternoon, and if you'll notice a certain consistency to the results.

<...>

That's not a bounce; it's a hiccup. In Gallup's poll, Romney's in slightly worse shape than he was a week ago, and in Reuters' poll, he's in slightly better shape, but it's hard to characterize this as a meaningful post-convention bump in the polls.

Adding insult to injury, Gallup reports today that Romney's convention speech had the worst public response of any major-party acceptance speech since Bob Dole's 1996 remarks.

Or it could just be a daily tracking anomaly that occurs when you just compare day to day results. I think the convention did absolutely nothing for Romney and if the Democratic Convention wasn't coming up soon we could see if it was actually hurting him or not as people let what that mess means sink in. I do predict Obama will get a pretty sizable bounce from his convention. I have no idea how long it will last. Then he will get some bounces from the debates. Romney is going to have a miserable couple of months then he will be history.

Yes, maybe because of Labor Day Weekend, but also because they can't show a bump for Romney. The polls that have come out have shown the convention to have been a wash at best, a huge failure at worst...nothing changed, from Ryan to Eastwood, and it's starting to sink in with the GOPers. That's one of the reasons they're all on this board trolling today: it's the first day when it's clear that there was no bump, and that has them in panic mode. So they troll here and elsewhere, transparently desperate. They should be.

The Romney donors are probably close to the edge. They're going to start hedging soon, especially if Obama pulls a two or three point bounce out of the DNC, as he likely will. The Big Money - Romney's only hope - will see that he is a probable loser, and will start worrying about making enemies of the second term Obama Admin. They'll start pulling the Romney money and injecting some funds into Obama's campaign. You think not? You don't understand a hedge. Romney needs to pull way ahead in the next 72 hours in several major polls. It won't happen. The Big Money is going to move, and everybody knows it.
