Thank you Jimmy Carter

When it was announced that Jimmy Carter would speak by video to the DNC convention on Tues, Sept 4, I was not surprised that the right-wingers would immediately blast him as they always do as "the second worst president (Obama being the first)". I sincerely wish they might try to imagine what could have been accomplished by their great "religious" heroes Nixon, Reagan, and W Bush if they had taken the words of Jesus to heart, become peacemakers, and committed their lives to serve "the least of these" as Carter has done.

An ordinary man has made an extraordinary difference in the lives of millions. Very few have done more than Jimmy Carter to promote human rights, civil rights, democratic elections, or to personally take on the world-wide tragedies of hunger, poverty, disease and homelessness. He has not just talked to world leaders but promoted peaceful resolution of conflicts, compliance with international law, fair systems of justice and taxation, women's, children's and worker's rights, and finding ways to preserve our beautiful planet.

He has not suffered despots, fools, Pharisees, money-changers, or Republicans gladly, but has always had a forgiving heart when people, leaders, or nations change direction and work to make the world a better place. I am disappointed that Clinton and Obama have not used his wise counsel and world reports more, but now is the time we Democrats can make a difference by working and electing leaders who, like Jimmy Carter, will leave a true legacy of hope and change. Happy 88th birthday, Mr. President.

I loved him then as much as I do now. Good man who had the same problems as Clinton and Obama and that was a republicon party that worked to undermine everything he did. never worked with him on anything that I can remember.
Happy Birthday President Carter, may you have many many more.

...he really IS a true Christian and only Ike served longer in the military.

BTW: For those too young to remember, Reagan and Bush the elder spent their entire time in office blaming Carter for the economy and now the Republicans are claiming Dubya didn't exist.

My only beef with him is that he didn't open relations with Cuba. But everything else he did in office was great and he was the last POTUS to call for sacrifice.

10. You Want to Grow Old Like the Carters --Alice Walker

Being someone who grew up in Georgia, this one is close to my heart...

You Want to Grow Old Like the Carters

Let other leaders
Retire
To play golf
& write
Memoirs
About bombing
Villages
They've never seen.

Growing old
Presents a peril
They may not
Expect.

It is to lose
One's soul
In trivia
& irrelevance
The nerve
Endings
Blunted
By the constant
Pressure
Of moral
Indifference.

Growing old
A curse:
Not even
Generally speaking
Able
To relate
To whoever
Shares

Your house. Not the mansion
You inhabit
On the
Lovely stolen hill
Above the sea
Or the interior one:
The darkened
Desolate
Shack.

You want to grow old
Like
The Carters;
Curing blindness
&
Building houses
For
The Poor;

Making friends of those
Who believe
They must fight.

You want to grow old
Like
The Carters
Holding hands
With someone
You love
&
Riding bicycles
Leisurely
Where the ground
Is well known
& perfectly
Flat.

You want to find
And keep to the path
Laid down
Inside you
Such a long time
Ago.

You want to grow old
Like
The Carters:
Serene. Eyes
Twinkling
To be accused
Of
Not getting
It right.

Upfront, upright.
Speaking what to you is true.

A person rich in Mothers.
Beloved.

And:
Honoring what is black
In you.

phooed him for it. It was the GOP and Reagan that campained on the idea that the US should mind it's own business and stay out of the human rights issues around the word. Mainly this was because the GOP covertly favored Apartheid and was courting the Chinese for corporate purposes.
