Yesterday Rooney said he'd consider voting to impeach Trump. Today he announced his retirement. Why am I not surprised at all?

A day after Rep. Francis Rooney (Fla.) became the first House Republican to say he would consider voting to impeach President Trump, he announced his retirement.
The two-term congressman from a reliably conservative district announced on Fox News on Saturday that he has decided not to run for reelection. His spokesman subsequently confirmed the decision.
Rooney told reporters on Friday when asked about the political consequences of potentially impeaching Trump that I didnt take this job to keep it. . . . I took this job to do the right thing at all times.
Asked if he was worried about Trumps wrath, Rooney said he wasnt.
Whats he going to do to me? I mean, he can say bad things, but its just what it is, Rooney said. Theres a lot of people around who are seriously concerned about being criticized by the president. Seriously. I just want to call them as I see it. I want to get the facts and do the right thing because Ill be looking at my children a lot longer than Im looking to anybody in this building.

(1,850 posts)He may vote for impeachment because he's got nothing to loose.
Let's hope that all or most of the repugs who aren't running for reelection will vote against rump.
Those leaving probably have concerns about 45 and their party, and they can't or won't speak out against him if they stay.
I want to believe that the rats who are jumping ship have a small amount of conscience, and can't stay and pretend to support the corruption that is 45's standard practice.

(10,721 posts)Or, in rare cases, don't have anything to worry about (Romney, certain Republican governors, etc.).
The nerve of Rooney, after all these years and just as he's set to leave Congress, to suggest that he just wants to "do the right thing" so he can look at his kids without shame. What a putz. Where was he in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, the first half of 2019? His kids should be ashamed.

(5,502 posts)And he must be good with that. Otherwise he would have walked back his comments. The more Republicans in congress that aren't running for reelection the worse it is for Trump. They are free. He'll have no leverage over them.

(1,836 posts)He didnt suddenly decide to retire today. In fact part of his CNN interview was about his record low fundraising numbers and the fact it was expected he would not be running again.
None of this means he will or will not vote to impeach,
Which he will presumably still have a voice in since I have not read he wont be finishing his term. The fact he isnt running for re-election means he can vote however he wants without fearing the wrath of MAGAts
