Former U.S. President Barack Obama, in an unprecedented reach across the border, has endorsed Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just five days before an embattled Trudeau faces Canada's voters in a national election.
"I was proud to work with Justin Trudeau as President: He's a hard working, effective leader who takes on big issues like climate change," Obama tweeted. "The world needs his progressive leadership now and I hope our neighbors to the north support him for another term."
Canada votes Oct. 21. The latest polls show the Liberal Park under Trudeau in a dead-heat with the Conservative Party led by a Saskatchewan politician named Andrew Scheer. If neither party wins a majority of seats in the House of Commons, the balance of power may belong to smaller parties, the leftist New Democrats and the separatist Bloc Quebecois.
Trudeau came to power in October of 2015. He and Obama forged a friendship that has continued after the 44th president left office. The men have met twice and dined together. By contrast, remarks by Trudeau after a G-8 summit set off a tantrum by President Donald Trump on Air Force One.
