A federal judge on Tuesday overturned ObamaCare protections for transgender patients, ruling that a 2016 policy violates the religious freedoms of Christian providers.

Judge Reed O'Connor in the Northern District of Texas vacated an Obama-era regulation that prohibited providers and insurers who receive federal money from denying treatment or coverage to anyone based on sex, gender identity or termination of pregnancy.

It also required doctors and hospitals to provide "medically necessary" services to transgender individuals, as long as those services were the same ones provided to other patients.

O'Connor, who is the same judge who last year ruled the entire Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional, said the rule violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

5. how are doctors compelled to perform gender transition services?

i get that how the regulation would require insurance companies to pay for such services, but how are doctors compelled to perform such services?

doctors aren't trained in every last procedure and can't be compelled, afaik, to seek training in every last procedure. if a doctor isn't trained in gender transition services, how can they be compelled to perform such services? and if they sought such training, why then complain?


i'm guessing what they really mean is that people who are trained to do basic things like blood draws don't want to do blood draws for transgender patients because they're claiming a "religious belief" that they should be assholes to transgender people at every opportunity, not that they have any religious objection to blood draws themselves.
