https://www.alternet.org/2019/10/u-s-nuclear-weapons-are-now-being-held-as-essentially-erdogans-hostages-in-turkey-report/Those weapons, one senior official said, were now essentially Erdogans hostages. To fly them out of Incirlik would be to mark the de facto end of the Turkish-American alliance. To keep them there, though, is to perpetuate a nuclear vulnerability that should have been eliminated years ago.
I think this is a first a country with U.S. nuclear weapons stationed in it literally firing artillery at US forces, Jeffrey Lewis of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies wrote last week.
For his part, Mr. Erdogan claims nuclear ambitions of his own: Only a month ago, speaking to supporters, he said he cannot accept rules that keep Turkey from possessing nuclear weapons of its own.
I'm still letting that sink in.

If Trump should resign, the next President needs to have the freedom to launch attacks on the Turkish forces in Syria and back the Kurds.
The nukes are a hostage device. As would be our troops.
What would be the result right now should the Turks shell our remaining forces in Syria?

(6,395 posts)We launch an attack on a fellow NATO member...what does that say about NATO? Sure, Turkey has never been an ideal ally...just an ally of circumstances...which no longer exist. But think of the ramifications to other NATO members? Already stretched no thanks to "W"...granted he probably never thought it possible to see Dump elected.

(12,712 posts)Many people were still in shock after the takeover. There were fears and concerns, but only the most paranoid could imagine such a horrendous outcome, after-all, it was the end of the United States as a Constitutional government.
Some said that everything that Trump had been doing, especially since impeachment looked inevitable, involved a series of machinations that would lead to a national state of emergency. I can't bear to recount the events again, it's just too powerful and emotional and fresh, especially with the stressful climate of the dictatorship we live in now. In retrospect, we realize that, of course, Trump would do what he has done, given the chance. He would seize the powers of that emergency to finish off what appears to have been his plan all along. It is clear as squeegeed glass that he created the emergency in a series of steps that has led to this.
Well, it is time to quit writing for now. The Trump Patrols are making the rounds. I can hear the sound of the jackboots slamming against the concrete. That terrible sound is the sound of New America, the hard, synchronized slap of soles marching down the street, day and night. The soles that repeatedly stomp on human faces all over the country and there is no way out now, Commander Trump has assured that tyranny is the rule of law. We lost it all. They are holding the tribunals and the firing squads should be assembling soon.
