Fox News alum Carl Cameron worried Shepard Smith's exit could turn channel into 'propaganda'
Erin Jensen
USA TODAY
Carl Cameron, a former Fox News reporter who was with the channel for more than 20 years, is voicing his concerns after Shepard Smith shocked by announcing his departure Friday.
Cameron, who says his "Campaign Carl" moniker came courtesy of Smith, appeared on CNN's "Reliable Sources" Sunday to discuss the impact his former colleague's exit may have on the channel.
Cameron also expressed his concern over those who will be filling Smith's slot. "If they're actually news journalists, then that'll be a good sign for the 3:00 hour," Cameron said, "and if it's not, if it's opinion mavens, then that'll be just another big chunk of real journalism that won't exist there."
Until the network names a permanent replacement, it will become an hour-long news show titled "Fox News Reporting," featuring a rotating cast of anchors, the network announced in a news release.

(52,253 posts)of course foxnews has always been propaganda, founded for that express purpose.
but that propaganda has always been more effective because they've pretended to be and have generally been treated as a legitimate journalistic organization. it's only very, very recently, that they're somewhat routinely referred to as a "conservative" new organization and sometimes even with the suggestion that they may be (no, really?) biased.
shep was one of the people who helped give them that journalistic legitimacy.
losing him doesn't change their *actual* status as a propaganda network, but it may have a serious impact on their *image*. the less journalistic they appear, the more people may recognize them as the propaganda network they actually are.

(16,616 posts)It reminds me of what happened to "all-news radio" a decade ago. First they transformed into "news/talk" and had a couple hours of real news in the morning and afternoon. Then many of these radio stations got rid of their news departments and just ran talk, much of it syndicated. They still call themselves "news/talk" but they're just talk.
