and it is about money. Google oil and gas pipelines through Syria and the picture becomes clearer. Oil and gas pipelines from Iraq and Iran go through Syria but Assad won't allow a Qatari gas pipeline to cross his country. Putin administers the Iraq/Iran pipelines.
