Why is this "sport" still around - ban it

Boxer Patrick Day is in “extremely critical condition” and remains in a coma after being knocked out by defending champion Charles Conwell during a USBA super welterweight title bout on Saturday in Chicago, Day’s management team said Sunday.

Conwell pummeled Day with a right hand that stunned him and then floored the challenger with a left hook in the 10th round, The Associated Press wrote. Day had been knocked down twice already.

Day, 27, from Freeport, Long Island, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a “traumatic brain injury,” according to DiBella Entertainment, his management team. He suffered seizures on the way and underwent emergency surgery, ESPN reported.

“Patrick’s condition is extremely grave,” Day’s trainer, Joe Higgins, told Newsday Sunday. “He is fighting for his life. That’s all we can really say right now.”

I hate to admit I used to love boxing. I think it started when I was a kid with Ali and grew from there. It was sometime in the late 80s when I read an article about the long-term brain damage in fighters and was so horrified I never watched another fight. I agree with you. It should be banned. I hope this young man can make a recovery.

Young Mr. Day will be brain damaged for the rest of his life. My brother-in-law suffered a terrible head injury in a car accident and he went from being my beloved brother to becoming an abusive monster.

I agree that Boxing should be a thing of the past. Lots of things like that out there too.
Thanks for the post.

I hate it and my father was a professional boxer. I believe that is what caused his Parkinson's Disease many years later.

I never watched any rounds except when Ali was in the ring, and I think I only watched HIM more than the boxing. Last time I saw him was an interview on some show like 60 Minutes ir something like that. I felt so bad for him & his wife.

I know the promise of all that money is very attractive to young guys, but they really have to recognize what is likely to happen to them & all the money in the World wouldn't matter.

Not to defend MMA necessarily because there are more similarities than the community would like to admit. However, if he had been knocked down twice before in a striker sport, why does the bout continue? I understand this was a title fight, therefore 10 rounds. That is at least 2 rounds too many because MMA title fights and main events are 5 5min rounds, the typical fight is 3 5min rounds.

Also, Boxing referees are supposed to be run by trained, state Athletic commissioned sanctioned officials. It can also be that MMA as a sport is relatively young and is lucky not to get to this level, but this is sickening. MMA rules are still largely based on Boxing; this needs to be flipped and Boxing needs to move to more Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts (North America primarily).

The only way to really end it is for people to stop watching. As long as people keep paying to light up the colisseum, it will continue.

Truth is that several sports have/allow action that can result in head injuries. The adult participants are exercising free choice. The question is for underage participants, should his be allowed.

we were watching a wrestling match broadcast live when the broadcast was halted. A wrestler who went by the name of Mr. Moto died in the ring of a broken neck and that made a big impression on me.

Lots of things are inherently dangerous but as long as all participants are free to opt out I fail to see the problem.

as it will probably drive the sport underground where it is illegal and even more dangerous.

It's such an idiotic "sport". If stupid people want to risk killing themselves to entertain other stupid, violence loving people, I guess there isn't much we can do to stop them. Sounds like the audience would be pretty much made up of 95% Trumpers.
