The. Flag.
The right is trying to "own" patriotism and its symbols. We see MAGATs waving the flag or wearing one. We see rednecks driving pickup trucks with an American flag sticker on the back right next to their Trump sticker.
Many of us are ashamed of some of the things our country has done, or is doing, and we think that raising or honoring the flag means we support what our government does.
A friend recently mentioned to me that he thinks the right owns the flag now. Obviously that a bit of an overstatement. But it is true, I think most lefties wouldn't be seen in public with a flag on their shirt or their hat or on car bumper sticker. And if we see someone with with a flag on their shirt, we often make an assumption about their political views.
Fuck that.
They don't own the flag and we can't let them try to.
The flag is symbolic of our country and our Constitution (NOT the people currently holding office). That Constitution is going to save us from this tyrant.
The flag is a symbol of our freedom. Freedom of the press and freedom of speech and others, which we still have to some degree, and are also going to help save us from the tyrant.
If we let the right own the flag, we are doomed, not only as a party but as a country.
One of my heroes is Abbie Hoffman. When he was leading the protests against the Vietnam War, he understood this. He was ashamed of what his country was doing too. But he waved the flag. He wore the flag. And it wasn't a gimmick. He knew exactly what he was doing.
When Abbie wore the flag, he was saying "you can't do this. Its our country too."
I'm not saying we should all wear shirts like Abbie's. I'm saying we should not let the other side own the flag and patriotism, although they try. We should wave the flag, just like them. Just like Abbie.
Yes I am ashamed of my country in many ways. But I'm not going to let the current administration and the downward direction we've taken in the last few years cause me to lose my faith, hope, or love of this country or the flag that symbolizes it.
It's our flag.
Note: Of course if you are really upset or worried about what is happening in our country, you can always hold the flag upside down
