Should we ignore it (hence denying history and what his discovery led to) or should we celebrate it (acknowledging what his discovery led to).
I am aware of the genocide, slavery, plagues and exploitation of the native population of his setting foot in the Americans. But, I can remember back in 1992 how America ignored the 500th year of his landing.
I can remember when it was a day to remember because it was a school holiday and there were actually parades in our small town to celebrate the day.

(16,296 posts)As I was waiting for my flu shot, my wife and I had a conversation with an elderly couple. They said they were worried about getting their shot because their daughter was an anti-VAXer and had them worried.
I asked them if they had their polio shot when it first came out. Of course they said best thing ever. I asked if they ever had a lock-jaw shot or any other injections to prevent diseases. They admitted they had. I asked them if they had their daughter vaccinated for measles and polio. Of course they said.
I just gave them a , "O.K. - think about that" look and let it sink in.

They didn't bring guns, deadly diseases, and violent imperialistic Christianity with them.
Christian imperialists aggressively destroyed the "pagan" histories of anyone who came before them.
