he might TALK about austerity, and he might give a big middle finger to those in need, but don't think for a minute that it's austerity he's pushing.

republicans are masters of heavily funding the federal government through taxes on the poor and middle class and debt on future generations, then absconding with the loot via tax cuts and lax enforcement for the rich and big businesses; preferential, overpriced, no-bid government contracts; and wholesale giveaways of government properties.

that's not austerity. it's looting and pillaging.

Dems should educate voters what "austerity" means, and to be wary of wealthy Republicans when they use the word. And they will use it... but never regarding themselves.

"austerity" involves minimal spending in order to shore up finances. there's no such thing as "austerity" for ANYONE if it doesn't shore up finances.

as long as they continue to siphon funds out of the treasury, then whoever they're short-changing isn't getting "austerity", they're getting screwed.

Cutting most of the other programs though which are already running deficits and have no trust fund to speak of, that would be austerity in the true sense of the word.

reducing the debt by 1% or whatever by ending wic and then adding 8% to the debt by jacking up military expenditures is NOT austerity.

reducing the debt by 1% and actually freezing everything else, actually paying down the debt, that would be austerity. it would still but stupid and unfair and unwise and immoral, but at least the term "austerity" would be appropriate then.

is because of the economy. If Obama can win this election he will be one of the first presidents to win in a bad economy. His favorable stats are looking good and the economy is not doing as bad as it was. As much as we would love to crush Romney and win by a landslide, I think it will be closer than most of us would want it to be. But I do believe Obama has a good chance. Of course we also have Citizens United to contend with. This is unprecedented. We will not know the full extent of the how it will affect the election until election night. We have to do what we did in 2008 and get the grassroots organization going again. Small donations from lots of people and lots of ground work getting the vote out.

The economy was a lot worse just 3 years ago, and many people have woken up and realized that the GOP was to blame for most of that mess. Although that won't be enough if we don't stop fighting voter suppression.

you wouldnt feel so bad. She has 3 very liberal daughters (no sons) and still thinks the R ticket is the way to go, because right wing radio has her turned into such a paranoid fruitcake that she votes out of completely illegitimate fear. It is really the worst, she is not even senile yet. Or perhaps she is.

I have a family member like that. It's annoying as can be. I minimize my contact with that person and talking politics is a no no (although they can't help themselves). The Right Wing lie machine is relentless.

I mean some of them are but most are just ignorant of the scope of the situation and the depravity of the Republican side.

Imagine if you were not paying attention and then you decided to tune in to the conventions and you were watching from the window of FOX news because it was the only news window of which you were aware. Would you be able to see through their crap? Some of them will. It may take the "debates" but many of them will...
