The proper response to are you better off today than four years ago (which President Carter did not think of in that 1980 debate), is to state that the real question is: Will you be better off in four years with me or with my opponent? Do my plans make more sense, or a return to the failed policies of the past that my opponent would implement.
For Carter, it was to tie Reagan to Hoover's policies. For President Obama, it is to tie Romney to GWB's.
Alas, Carter did not pose this counter question, but this year it should be used.
