Just read Nate Silver's take on the potential impact of voter ID laws on turn out. His conclusion is that they will have a small (-2 pt.) impact on turnout and for very 1 pt. this translates to about a (- .6pt ) impact for Obama ...not enough to change the results of the election, but what if these laws are just a smoke screen for stealing it the old fashioned way? Think 2004 Diebold machines. Even if Obama is far ahead in the polls in say PA, Repugs can just say that dem leaning voters didn't turnout because they were discouraged by the voter ID requirements? Somebody talk me down!

Let's spend less time inventing the various ways that we're powerless, shall we?
Geez. Buck the fuck up.

(28,082 posts)and all they've done is sit back and let ALEC pass voter supression laws in several states.
So, to answer your question, yes they will let it happen again. And there is nothing the rank and file can do to stop it.
Dream Girl
(5,111 posts)But it will not really impact the results (take a look at 538) ...however the whole voter suppression meme provides cover for more conventional vote stealing. I haven't heard any mention of this take on it

You might get a less-than-stellar response, because this is very old news here.

(13,262 posts)Yes, you and I, vastly wise DUers, may have figured this out before. The reaction to somebody expressing her reaction to the moment she figures it out should not be "fuck off." There are a lot of different kinds of denial. "I figured this out long before you did" is apparently one of them, and a singularly useless one, at that.

over the last 4 years i have become to trust Nate... more importantly the Obama campaign is a juggernaut, well executed... and finally i trust the American public to make the proper decisions

(4,769 posts)As for the talking you down. Can't do it. These people are enemies of democracy and will do anything to steal an election. The Jim Crow-like laws, voter ID, are all the proof any objective observer would need to confirm that these people are at their core, fascist.
We should be in the streets.

(5,420 posts)check out Bradblog.com He has a lot of good info on that unless it's changed. The 2004 election was stolen. Who knows how many others. But try and get the news to do a story on it and all you get is them trying to drum up one single voter who voted twice. Thats voter fraud. What they've been doing is flipping the fucking votes when needed, then the wonderful machines that they forced on us doesn't have a paper trail. No proof. That's election fraud and that's a real problem. Not allowed to see the insides of the machines and how they work. We even had a guy who had been paid to make the vote flip unseen. Nope not allowed to be reported in our media. Can't report that. It has been proven again and again that the machines are hackable without even touching them.
See what we're up against?
Can't talk you down, you might have to jump.

(5,111 posts)Of cOuse I get what the
Laws are intended to do on their face. I've never heard anyone mention that these laws are really just intended as a cover/justification for the more traditional electoral fraud a la Ohio 2004. Believe me I've been around a lot longer than most of you guys throwing out the snark. No need for it

(5,420 posts)It's just become a fact for so many of us on here as we watch the various efforts to stop us from voting, the various methods to make it look close for the steal, the red herring of voter fraud.
It just was kind of like you running in going "OMG, the republicans are liars" It just is something we already know about.
I tried to give you a little background coz u sounded new to the idea. Your post count indicated that you may be new. Just tried to fill you in. Not trying to give you grief.

(15,262 posts)And your reaction is appropriate. If only more people realized the nature of the situation, there might be appropriate backlash.
There are voter purges going on also, targeted by race and other demographic factors predicting liberal voting patterns.
There is suppression of voter registration going on.
There is limiting of voting hours and early voting going on.
The attacks on organizations registering voters is going on, ACORN the best example.
The limitations on where and when you can obtain a valid voting ID is being manipulated to discriminate against voting blocs.
All this is happening in plain view, no doubt with a covert level of activity and conspiracy too.
No doubt things are going on we have yet to detect, of course.
Are the missing millions and millions in Iraq funneled into the now secret campaign financing?
Are foreign government involved in secret political financing?
All this, and at the end of the day if they see they are losing, of course there are the easy to control voting machines, engineered specifically to make stealing elections overseas easy.
But hey, why worry. Go register voters instead. The tide is with us. Old people die and young voters take their places

I don't know if that is true.
No one seems to have much information, just like 2008.
Thus I guess that they have run the numbers and it's not a huge threat
or they know they can't control it and don't want to be seen as paranoid.
For all we know Obama won by a much, much greater amount last time.
