What has struck me about Trump is how consistent he is in insisting that his appointees engage in criminal acts. Comey was hit up early on with respect to Michael Flynn. Jeff Sessions was berated for recusing himself and refusing to squelch the Russia investigation.
Yet, these are exceptions rather than rule. Instead, more often than not, Trump's appointees willing commit the crimes, thus demonstrating loyalty to Trump over any sense of duty to the laws or the Nation. By committing the crime, they gain acceptance into Trump's inner circle. In addition, having committed the crime, they cannot act against Trump without implicating themselves.
It reminds me of growing up and hearing about the initiation rites of local gangs. I always wondered why did a gang require initiates to commit crimes in order to join. It just seemed like a lot of bravado. Instead, it may just be a means of demonstrating and ensuring loyalty among the members.

These crimes, Virginia Gang Investigators Association President Randy Crank explained, are a show of loyalty to the gang, and can range from larceny to violence.
Gang initiations include committing crimes to show their commitment to the gang, to show they have heart, Crank wrote in an email. They do it for monetary gain, to build reputation, move up in rank.
The impetus for joining a gang, Whitley said, is often to fill a personal vacuum and gain respect and status.
That lifestyle fills a void for young people, Whitley said. Its not like they are getting into a gang for the criminal side. They do it for acceptance.

(17,387 posts)I am sure it starts off as a slippery slope where Trump first starts by asking for a favor by bending the rules and overlooking a criminal violation or investigating a political opponent. I am sure the hope is that Trump won't push it further such as when James Comey did not say squat about Trump's request that he drop the investigation of Michael Flynn until later.
Of course, Trump just keeps on pushing the envelope until each person in his administration is a complete accomplice complete with Trump leaking their respective roles as a way to remind them that if Trump goes down, they all go down. Thus, Trump's leaks of Michael Pence's role was designed to send the message to Congressional Republicans that there is no Plan B. The Republican Party at this point in time is nothing more than the cult of Trump.

(17,387 posts)Perhaps it is too late, because every top Republican is in too deep. Trump's game plan is not merely to smear Joe Biden, but to indict and arrest him or any Democratic nominee. What is to stop them? Trump takes out the Democratic nominee and McConnell works with Senate Republicans to stop any impeachment efforts.

In the brief Facebook video, McConnell makes it clear that the Republican-controlled Senate with him in charge will be a firewall against efforts to remove Trump from office.
"All of you know your Constitution," McConnell says in the video. "The way that impeachment stops is with a Senate majority with me as majority leader."
The Senate leader, a steadfast Trump defender, avoided the impeachment issue during public appearances in his home state of Kentucky this past week.

(14,118 posts)There are other ways to accomplish this besides impeachment. Public opinion comes to mind.
No way would Muscovy Mitch survive an investigation, but we need to make the effort. Hand wringing and pearl clutching ain't gonna get it.
