New Gallup poll shows Trump at 40% approval

this week and 56% disapproval.

Can anyone explain to me how his approval basically never moves, ever? If support for impeachment is increasing, even among Republicans and Independents, how is his approval staying permanently at 40%?

I don't understand how absolutely nothing can really move it from that point.

Scroll down to "How Trump compares with past presidents": https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/

His approval rating has been incredibly steady. It's unprecedented. And it's why the only Republicans who will risk challenging Trump are leaving Congress or in really safe seats (e.g., Romney).

Getting a conviction in the Senate will require incredibly salacious evidence.

25-30%: Bedrock "base" support. Shoots their granny on 5th Avenue and, well, MAGA!!
8-10%: Don't care for the guy, but hey, the economy, and I'm too dense to realize it's despite him and not because of him.
3-5%: He's the devil we know. Not sure a Democrat would be any better. Stay the course, even if it means going off the cliff.

Make America Great Again means opposing immigrants, minorities, homosexuals. Many people think those nonwhites or other weirdos unfairly get government benefits from taxes they pay. They think all government spending is wasteful, taking their money and giving it to those who don’t deserve it. They see Trump as understanding that.

That means more land-lines, and that means they tend to over-sample older voters. (That is changing, but slowly.) Therefore, they trend rightward.
