The lone valiant farmer struggling to eke an existence from his hardscrabble farm — that’s the image President Trump wants you to think about when contemplating the $28 billion in bailouts he’s spending to cover farm losses from his trade war.

Think again. The vast majority of the dollars flowing to the agriculture industry via the bailouts is likely to go to farms with annual revenues of several million dollars. Most of them are major beneficiaries of federal crop support programs that steer billions in subsidies and low-priced crop insurance — including insurance that already covers some of their losses in the trade war.

Suicide rates among small farmers have been historically high as well and appear to be climbing.

It is wrong to demonize the little guys, even if they are foolish to have voted for Trump.

Nobody is demonizing the little guy. But, I and a lot of people here have probably had to give up a job they love and retrain for, or start over, for/in something else because of economic realities. Farmers, solo physicians, buggy whip makers, bank clerks, etc., have all been through it. Yes, it's sad, but it's reality.

I am a small farmer. It is a working farm and I do it myself but it actually would be called a hobby farm most likely. I grow and sell a crop but I do not have to to get by. IOW, I make no money I only make what I need to feed the livestock that I keep for myself. Not for food.

There are a lot of small farmers around here who did vote for Trump but I never see them anymore. Used to see them at the feed store. There were quite a few who would never have even considered him. But, we all go down with the talking points don't we.

Mexicans, etc.

Second off, have you looked at the schedule of subsidies. Sure, larger farms get more, mainly because they lost more.

But, there is also a cap on the payment. So large farms are limited to what they get. Some large farms have tried to position themselves to get around that cap somewhat, but it's still capped. So they are likely getting a smaller percentage of their loss. Personally, any farm taking steps to get get around caps to some degree should be penalized, even if what they are doing is not illegal.
