Should the Senate fail to act on impeachment

the US Senate would give its imprimatur to permit and indeed encourage, foreign intervention in our political system.

The Democratic Party will then have every right, it being acceptable conduct, to court other countries to throw the election to us. The founding fathers despised the thought of foreign influence on elections. They understood that once something so pernicious to our democracy is permissible, the Constitutional moorings of the government will easily give way. Trump’s residency in the WH is either heralding the end of the Constitution or providing a rebirth of our beloved institutions. It is so strange that the party clothed as Conservatives who breathlessly admire the founding fathers would reject their unanimous wisdom that foreign influence in our political system will surely destroy our Constitutional government.

“The framers also feared that presidents or other executive officers might prove disloyal to the country and Constitution they were sworn to protect. Thus the impeachment clause, as originally written, singled out the crimes of treason and bribery as grounds for impeachment.

...Washington...famous passages of his 1796 farewell address. As he voluntarily retired after two terms, Washington was at pains to warn against all foreign entanglements:

"Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence ... the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly awake, since history and experience prove that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of republican government."
